Validity of the Patient‐Rated Wrist Evaluation questionnaire in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Background The Patient‐Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) is a patient‐reported questionnaire focusing on symptoms and function in wrist pathologies. It consists of 15 questions regarding pain and functional activities of the wrist. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multi‐systemic disease characterized by inflammation of the wrist and hand joints in almost all patients. This study aims to test the validity of PRWE in patients with RA. Method Seventy‐five patients with RA from a single outpatient clinic participated in… Show more

“…Tampoco se tuvo en cuenta el daño radiológico; sin embargo, en estudios previos en los cuales se evaluó la correlación entre capacidad funcional y daño estructural, los resultados fueron contradictorios. Esto podría deberse al diferente tiempo de seguimiento y evolución de la enfermedad, así como también a los diversos métodos radiológicos empleados 12 .…”

“…In a study in patients at a rehabilitation clinic with hand complaints, there was a moderate correlation ( r = −0.62) with the Hand Function Sort scale (119). In another study with 48 patients with hand or wrist problems, the PRWHE showed a moderate correlation with the DASH ( r = 0.60) (116,117).…”

“…In this study, low to moderate correlations were found with the SF‐36 summary scores, Activity Scale for the Elderly, Nottingham Health Profile, and global disability rating ( r = 0.30 to 0.70) (112). In 75 patients with RA, the PRWE correlated strongly with the MHQ ( r = −0.83 and r = −0.79 for dominant and nondominant hand, respectively) and correlated moderately with grip strength ( r = −0.52 and r = −0.56 for dominant and nondominant hand, respectively) (117). In patients undergoing wrist surgery, the PRWE correlated strongly with the DASH ( r = 0.61) and correlated moderately with a VAS of pain ( r = 0.50) (118).…”

“…The sample size was calculated for the primary endpoint, the difference in PRWE scores at 3 months. According to one study, the median PRWE score in RA patients is 20.0 (IQR: 9.8–48.3) for the dominant hand and 22.8 (IQR 6.9–38.6) for the non-dominant hand, but means and standard deviations for RA are not known [ 27 ]. The mean PRWE score among the general population was estimated as 7.7 with a standard deviation of 15.0 [ 28 ].…”

“…The highest score is 100 and indicates severe disability, and the lowest score is 0 and indicates no disability. The PRWE has been validated for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and for the Dutch language [ 27 , 32 ]. Also, normative data and the minimal clinically important difference have been calculated for the PRWE [ 28 , 29 ].…”
