Validity of Point-of-Care Testing with Mission Plus Hemoglobin in Detecting Anemia

Abstract: Background: Point-of-care testing, POCT, was widely used to assess hemoglobin status before proceeding with the confirmation test. Our study aimed to assess the validity of Mission® Plus Hb in detecting hemoglobin levels in a general population compared with a standard laboratory hematology analyser as the gold standard. Methods: Two types of samples, capillary and venous blood, were collected from all respondents by trained nurses. Both blood samples were tested using Mission® Plus while the remaining venous b… Show more

“…Anaemia was defined as Hb level lower than 11.0 g/dl (Hb < 11.0 g/dl) in pregnant women [2] and Hb level lower than 10.0 g/dl in postpartum mothers (Hb < 10.0 g/dl) [3]. Capillary blood sampling from the finger was used because it provides a reliable and suitable alternative for sampling blood in the clinical and field settings [22][23][24].…”

“…Given these challenges, the development and implementation of inexpensive and accurate point‐of‐care assays are urgently needed in limited‐resource settings in order to rapidly, easily, and inexpensively diagnose life‐threatening conditions such as severe anemia. There have been several novel, inexpensive assays for the diagnosis of anemia recently developed , including the one described here, but none has become widely available in resource‐poor locations where severe anemia is prevalent and where low‐cost POC technology would have the highest impact. Although the tremendous global burden of anemia has been recently documented and described through the Global Burden of Diseases Study , the political and philanthropic recognition of non‐infectious causes of anemia (primarily inherited hemoglobinopathies and iron deficiency) remains low.…”

“…Overall, the Hemocue system is rapid, easy‐to‐use, and accurate means to measure hemoglobin, but the cost of the disposable cuvettes, although less expensive than more advanced hematology analyzers, is likely still too expensive for widespread use in the clinical setting of limited‐resource‐poor countries. The currently described assay is one among several other recently developed POC assays that have the potential to improve the diagnosis of severe anemia in resource‐limited settings where anemia is common and life‐threatening.…”

“…The examination was done by taking capillary blood samples which would be placed on a strip that would read hemoglobin levels automatically. The validity of hemoglobin measurements using this tool was 0.909 for measurements through capillary blood samples (Ahmad et al, 2015), while the reliability value for the Hb meter was 0.80 (Pawlowski et al, 2015). Pregnant women with hemoglobin levels of less than 11 g/dl were categorized as anemic (Silverberg, 2012).…”
