BackgroundSchool-based smoking prevention programs have been shown to increase knowledge of the negative effects of smoking and prevent tobacco smoking. The majority of evidence on effectiveness comes from Western countries. This study investigated the impact of school-based smoking prevention programs on adolescents’ smoking knowledge, attitude, intentions and behaviors (KAIB) in Aceh, Indonesia.MethodsWe conducted a 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial among 7th and 8th grade students aged 11 to 14 years. Eight schools were randomly assigned to a control group or one of three school-based programs: health-based, Islamic-based, or a combined program. Students in the intervention groups received eight classroom sessions on smoking prevention education over two months. The KAIB impact of the program was measured by questionnaires administered one week before and one week after the intervention.ResultsA total of 477 students participated (58% female, 51% eighth graders). Following the intervention, there was a significant main effect of the Health based intervention for health knowledge scores (β = 3.9 ± 0.6, p < 0.001). There were significant main effects of the Islamic-based intervention in both health knowledge (β = 3.8 ± 0.6, p < 0.001) and Islamic knowledge (β = 3.5 ± 0.5, p < 0.001); an improvement in smoking attitude (β = −7.1 ± 1.5, p < 0.001). The effects of Health and Islam were less than additive for the health and Islamic factors for health knowledge (β = −3.5 ± 0.9, p < 0.01 for interaction) and Islamic knowledge (β = −2.0 ± 0.8, p = 0.02 for interaction). There were no significant effects on the odds of intention to smoke or smoking behaviors.ConclusionsBoth Health and Islamic school-based smoking prevention programs provided positive effects on health and Islamic related knowledge respectively among adolescents in Indonesia. Tailoring program interventions with participants’ religion background information may provide additional benefits to health only focused interventions.Trial registrationAustralia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Register, ACTRN12612001070820
Background The prevalence of smoking among adolescents is high in Indonesia. Therefore, this qualitative research aimed to explore the perspectives of Muslim adolescents on smoking habits as a reference for developing effective prevention programs. Methods Three focus group discussions involving 24 junior high school male students (mean age = 13.75 years) were the main source of data for this phenomenological qualitative study. The discussion guide was developed by the researchers based on the reviewed literature and validated by experts. The research findings were analyzed using an inductive content analysis with systematic steps based on the stages of qualitative data analysis. Results Adolescent perspectives on smoking were grouped into two themes: perception of smoking and smoking-related factors. The perception of smoking encompassed three sub-themes: smoking as a social habit, contradictive feelings, and the Islamic perspective. The smoking-related factors included peer pressure, the parents’ smoking status, masculinity and curiosity. The results indicated that adolescents consider smoking as a social habit but with contradictory feelings. The smoking habit was also stimulated by peer pressure, imitating parents who smoke, feeling masculine and curiosity. Conclusion We suggest that health professionals who are interested in developing smoking prevention programs in Indonesia should consider the adolescent perspective on smoking so that the prevention program will be more effective and appropriate for adolescents.
BackgroundSmoking prevention programs have been taught in schools to reduce the high smoking prevalence and its related problems among adolescent populations. Although short-term benefits have been observed, the long-term effectiveness of such programs appear to be inconsistent. This study aims at investigating the long-term impact of both health and Islamic focused interventions amongst students in Indonesia.MethodsAt 6 months after completion of the interventions, 427 of the original 447 participants (control group = 128, intervention groups = 299) from a school-based cluster randomized control trial were re-assessed for their smoking knowledge, attitudes, intentions and behaviours using a self-report questionnaire. Data was analyzed according to the study’s 2 × 2 factorial design with adjustment for baseline scores, school and classroom clustering effects and multiple comparisons.ResultsCompared to the control group, significant long term effects were found for the health-based intervention program in improved health (β = 4.3 ± 0.4, p < 0.001), Islamic (β = 1.1 ± 0.4, p = 0.01) knowledge and a reduction of smoking attitudes (β = −11.5 ± 1.8, p < 0.001). For the Islamic-based intervention programs there was an improvement of health (β = 3.7 ± 0.4, p < 0.001) and Islamic (β = 2.2 ± 0.5, p < 0.001) knowledge and a reduction towards smoking attitude (β = −6.0 ± 1.9, p < 0.01) and smoking behaviors in the past month (OR = 0.1, 95 % CI = 0.0–0.8, p = 0.03). The effects were greater but less than additive in the combined group for health (β = −3.2 ± 0.9, p < 0.001 for interaction) and Islamic knowledge (β = −2.3 ± 0.9, p = 0.01 for interaction) but were additive for smoking attitudes (β = 6.1 ± 3.2, p = 0.07 for interaction). No significant effects on smoking intentions were observed at 6 months follow-up in the health or Islamic-based intervention programs.ConclusionSchool-based programs can provide long term benefits on Indonesian adolescents’ smoking knowledge and attitudes. Tailoring program intervention components with participants’ religious background might maximise program effectiveness. A larger and more encompassing study is now required to confirm the effectiveness of this new Indonesia culturally-based program. Adolescents in similar areas might also benefit from this type of school-based smoking cessation program.Trial registrationAustralian New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry, ACTRN12612001070820
This study aims to determine the community's knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in implementing the COVID-19 prevention health protocol in Banda Aceh City. The type of research used is descriptive with a cross-sectional study design. The study results showed that public knowledge was excellent, as many as 237 (56.4%) people. As many as 322 (76.7%) people, Attitudes are included in the superb category. The community's behavior is as excellent as many as 299 (71.2%) people. Conclusions, knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in implementing the COVID-19 prevention health protocol in Banda Aceh City are in the excellent category. Background. Anemia is a global maternal health problem that commonly occurs in developing countries. During pregnancy, a woman will receive antenatal services to check her condition and prevent complications. This study aimed to explore barriers towards achieving eradication of iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women in Aceh Besar District, Indonesia. Methods. This qualitative study was conducted on 18 health workers who were recruited through a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using open-ended questions to gain insight about participants’ experiences in managing iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women. Data analysis was conducted by an inductive content analysis method to evaluate, encode, and analyze the interview’s result. Result. Three main themes emerged: (1) facilities, infrastructures, and supplement support; (2) sociocultural factors; and (3) health provider competency deficits and no developing guidelines. Conclusion. Our findings provide understanding that there are many obstacles and barriers encountered by health workers in iron deficiency anemia prevention management. Thus, the management of anemia must be supported by a skilled health worker and quality facilities. Health workers and pregnant women must work together to achieve optimal management of anemia prevention.
Background: The present qualitative study assessed the need, acceptability and appropriateness for implementing effective and culturally appropriate smoking prevention programs for adolescents in schools in Indonesia. Methods: Snowball sampling was used to recruit participants. The study sample comprised a mixture of staff in the education department, junior high school teachers and individuals who had taught junior high school students in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Data were collected through one hour in-depth face to face or telephone interviews and analyzed using a descriptive content analysis procedure. Results: School teachers and policy makers in education firmly supported the implementation of a school-based smoking prevention program in Aceh. An appropriate intervention for smoking prevention program in schools in Aceh should involve both health and Islamic based approaches, and be provided by teachers and external providers. Potential barriers to the program included smoker teachers and parents, time constraints of students and/or teachers, lack of teachers' ability, increase in students' load, the availability of tobacco advertising and sales, and lack of tobacco regulation and support from community and related departments. To increase program effectiveness, involvement of and coordination with other relevant parties are needed. Conclusions: The important stakeholders in Indonesian childhood education agreed that school-based smoking prevention program would be appropriate for junior high school students. An appropriate intervention for smoking prevention program for adolescents in schools in Indonesia should be appropriate to participants' background and involve all relevant parties.
BACKGROUND: Anemia is one of the most common nutritional problems during pregnancy. Husbands have an important role in supporting their wives in pregnancy to prevent complications. Husband’s culture and beliefs will affect support for the health status of pregnant women. AIM: This study aims to explore husbands’ perceptions regarding anemia and cultural beliefs related to pregnancy. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using twelve in-depth interviews (IDIs) with husbands who have pregnant wives who were recruited through a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through IDIs using open-ended questions to gain insight about Husband’s Perception on Anemia among Pregnant Women based on Cultural Perspective. Data analysis was conducted by an inductive content analysis method to evaluate, encode, and analyze the interview’s result. RESULTS: Four themes emerged from interviews: (1) Husbands’ happiness and support to their wives during pregnancy; (2) Husbands’ perceptions and actions related to anemia symptoms; (3) Cultural beliefs during pregnancy believed by Acehnese people; and (4) the importance of local wisdom-based counseling. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide new insights into how husbands’ perceptions on anemia during pregnancy, how they support their pregnant wives, and what their believed in cultural views about pregnancy. These findings would assist in developing/adapting more strategic policies to prevent anemia in pregnancy.
This study aims to examine the relationship between family support and the quality of life of DM patients. This type of research is a quantitative research using a cross-sectional design. The results showed that most DM patients (64.3%) had a good quality of life. There is a statistically significant relationship between the quality of life of patients with emotional support (p-Value = 0.0002), instrumental (p-Value = 0.0005), and informational (p-Value = 0.000), but the relationship is not significant with support award (p-Value = 0.52). In conclusion, factors related to the quality of life of DM patients are emotional, instrumental, and informational support. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Family Support, Quality of Life
