Aim and Objectives:Tooth size prediction values are not universal for all ethnic and racial groups. The present study evaluated the applicability of Moyer's mixed dentition space analysis in the Marwari community of Rajasthan, India.Materials and Methods:The mesiodistal dimension of permanent mandibular incisors, maxillary and mandibular canine, and premolars of both sides were measured and averaged in 200 adolescents (100 males and 100 females) of the Marwari population in Rajasthan using digital Vernier caliper. Data were statistically analyzed using Student's t–test. The data were then compared with Moyer's predicted values. The tooth measurements of male and female participants were compared with unpaired t-test.Results:Moyer's prediction chart was not comparable with the study population group. The coefficient of correlation and coefficient of determination in our study was 0.57 and 0.25, respectively. Mesiodistal width of measured teeth was lesser in females compared to males for both canine and premolars (P = 0.471 and P = 0.0001, respectively).Conclusion:There was significant statistical difference between values of the present study and Moyer's prediction values. Hence, new regression equation and prediction table can be used to predict mesiodistal dimensions of canine and premolars in Marwari children of Rajasthan.

Background: The Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses, both of which were developed through research into the Nordic-Caucasoid population, constitute the most widely used non-radiographic mixed dentition analyses. Application of these prediction methods to other populations has been extensively investigated, although their suitability to the Arab population resident in Indonesia has rarely been studied. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the reliability of Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses of the Arab population of Pekalongan, a city in Central Java, Indonesia. Methods: This research constituted an observational study incorporating a cross-sectional design of 33 subjects who willingly signed an informed consent form. Their actual tooth size was determined in accordance with the inclusion criteria and then compared with the predictive tooth size values of the Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses. Results: Comparison of mean values indicated that the predictive values of Moyers 75% (YM) and Tanaka-Johnston (YT) were higher than the actual value (Y). The reliability test result confirmed a value of k = 0.026 for the Y-YM ratio; and k = 0.025 for YT-Y ratio. The calculation results for the mandible indicated a k-value of 0.000 for both types of comparisons between YM-Y and YT-Y. The Moyers 75% prediction for maxilla had a higher reliability value than that of Tanaka-Johnston. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test applied to Y, YM, and YT in the maxilla and mandible indicated that data was normally distributed (sig > 0.05). A Levene's test of homogeneity was conducted and produced homogeneous data (sig > 0.05) with values of 0.333 for Y, 0.516 for YM, and 1.000 for YT. An ANOVA test showed Y-YM and Y-YT to have insignificant differences (p<0.05). This result caused comparative tests to determine both analysis eminence in predicting canine and premolar values according to the study sample not conducted. Conclusion: The Moyers 75% and Tanaka-Johnston analyses were reliable because the values produced differed slightly from the actual values. This study concluded that Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses remain valid means of calculating mixed dentitions.

Prediction of Combined Mesiodistal Width of Unerupted Permanent Canine and Premolars using Moyer’s Mixed Dentition Analysis in Nepalese Newar Population

Introduction: Moyer’s probability table is most commonly used to predict the mesiodistal width of permanent canines and premolars in mixed dentition. However, the table was formulated using data from Caucasian population. This study was performed to compare the Moyer’s prediction table with actual value in Nepalese Newar population as ethnicity is one of the important factor to determine teeth width. Materials & Method: Combined mesiodistal width of permanent canine and premolars were measured in 150 study models of Nepalese Newar orthodontic patients (75males and 75 females). The value was compared with the Moyer’s prediction table at all probability level. Result: There was no statistically significant difference between the actual combined width and that predicted from Moyer’s table at 85% probability level for maxilla and at 75% level for mandible in male, at 95% probability level for maxilla and at 85% probability level for mandible in female. Conclusion: Moyer’s probability level can be used to predict the combined mesiodistal width of permanent canines and premolars in Nepalese Newar population but at specific probability level.
