Validation Test Report for GDEM4

Abstract: Global ocean climatology Temperature and salinity observations Since the 1970s, the U.S. Navy has maintained a state-of-the-art gridded global monthly full-depth climatology of temperature and salinity and their standard deviations called the Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM). The present document describes the development and evaluation of GDEM4, the newest version of GDEM. As part of the evaluation of GDEM4, comparisons are made in this report to GDEM3 and to four other ocean climatologies: the … Show more

“…The fields for months February, May, August, and November are described in section 6 and the rest of the months are available in the . The gridding procedure for the climatology follows Carnes et al [2010] and is based on a cost function designed to minimize the squared slope and data misfit to the gridded value, J=mn()Tn+1,mTn,mΔxm/Δy2+()Tn,m+1Tn,m12+ktrue(Tm,nθm,n,ktrue)2. …”

“…There are twin experiments performed with and without the Greenland freshwater flux imposed along the coast. Both experiments are initialized from a spin‐up simulation started from the ocean climatology fields from the Generalized Digital Environmental Model version 4 (Carnes et al, ) and are integrated for 1993–2016. One experiment is conducted without any freshwater flux from Greenland (hereinafter referenced as “GR−”).…”

“…A probability of error is then calculated based on the difference between the observation and background data. The sea ice concentration climatology is obtained from the European Centre for Medium Weather Forecast (ECMWF) climatology formed from years 1979 to 1996 [ Fernandez et al ., ], while ocean climatologies are obtained from Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM) [ Carnes et al ., ]. If the observation probability of error reaches a specified threshold (usually 5%), the data are not assimilated.…”
