Validation of US as a first-line diagnostic test for assessment of pediatric ileocolic intussusception

Abstract: US is a sensitive and specific test for detecting ileocolic intussusception and should be utilized as a first-line examination for assessment of possible pediatric intussusception.

“…It is much safer compared to barium enema, as leakage of contrast into the peritoneum carries high morbidity. When performed by an experienced operator, the sensitivity is as high as 98-100% and specificity is between 88-100% (Hryhorczuk & Strouse 2009). Typical ultrasound signs of intussusception are target sign and pseudo kidney sign, a transverse and cross longitudinal view of intussusception, respectively.…”

“…Summarizing, in children with acute abdominal pain and a strong suspect of intussusception the primary imaging modality of choice is ultrasound scanning, with a sensitivity of 98-100 %, a specificity of 88-97.8 % and a negative predictive value of 100 % [7,[31][32][33][34]. US has also a role in therapeutic decision.…”

“…The most common type is ileocolic, and most cases are idiopathic. Ultrasound is critical for a prompt and accurate diagnosis of intussusception, and has nearly 100% sensitivity for detection [26] . Imaging features of intussusception are characteristic, described as the "pseudokidney" or "donut sign", with alternating hyperechoic and hypoechoic concentric layers.…”
