Validation of the Short and Extra-Short Forms of the Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2) and Their German Adaptations

Abstract: Abstract. The present study investigates the validity and utility of the German adaptations of the two short forms of the Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2), the 30-item BFI-2-S, and the 15-item BFI-2-XS, developed by Soto and John (2017b) . Both scales assess the Big Five domains. The BFI-2-S allows, in addition, the brief assessment of three facets per domain. Based on a large and heterogeneous sample, we show that the psychometric properties of these adapted short scales are consistent with those of the Anglo-Ame… Show more

“…To validate the KSE-G against the Big Five dimensions of personality, a short scale measure of the Big Five, the extra-short form of the Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2-XS; English version: Soto & John, 2017; German version: Rammstedt, Danner, Soto, & John, 2018), was also administered as part of the survey. 5…”

“…Hence, high scores on PQ+ are tantamount to high scores on NQ−, implying high SDR. In order to investigate both types of construct validity by examining whether an underlying moralistic bias in answering personality items existed, we correlated the two subscales of the KSE-G with the Big Five traits, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness, assessed with the BFI-2-XS (Rammstedt et al, 2018;Soto & John, 2017). The results (see Table 4) support our expectations: For both countries, and for both subdimensions, the strongest associations were found for Agreeableness, followed by Conscientiousness.…”

“…1 = not proactive, 5 = very proactive). We further applied the BFI-2-XS (Rammstedt, Danner, Soto, & John, 2018) as a control measure of group differences. This test consists of 15 items assessing Big Five personality on a 5-point rating scale (1 = disagree strongly to 5 = agree strongly).…”

“…The German version of the BFI-2S (Rammstedt, Danner, Soto, & John, 2018;Soto & John, 2017) was used to assess the personality domains Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Negative Emotionality (Neuroticism), and Open-Mindedness (Openness) with six items each. In the present sample, this version showed a good reliability for all scales, 0.65 ≥ α ≥ 0.79.…”
