The designers of the NDDS ‘speculated that participating in parent‐completed screening may have positive effects on parents' knowledge … and the ways in which they support their child's development’ (Dahinten & Ford, , p. 12). Thus, parents' knowledge of their own real child is replaced by an image of the normal or ideal child, with the abnormal child as a shadowy frame of reference.…”
