Validation of the French Version of the Marijuana Craving Questionnaire (MCQ) Generates a Two-Factor Model

Abstract: Validation of the FMCQ-SF generated a two-factor model, different from the four-factor solution generated in English language studies. Considering that craving plays an important role in withdrawal and relapse, this questionnaire should be useful for French-language addiction professionals.

“…Three (Items 7, 8, and 9) were part of the original GACS factor, relief, and one (Item 5) was part of the original GACS factor, desire (Young et al, 2009). Notably, these two factors, Intention and desire to gamble and Relief from negative affect, are consistent with those previously reported in studies that used the QSU (Tiffany et al, 1991) in samples of cigarette smokers (e.g., Toll, Katulak, & McKee, 2006) and marijuana consumers (Chauchard et al, 2015). This consistency in results between the present study and these studies is important because the GACS items are directly inspired from the QSU items.…”

“…An EFA with principal axis factoring was thus performed to explore the structure of the scale. Oblique rotation (Promax) was used to allow factors to correlate and to increase their interpretability, which is similar to the strategy generally used for multidimensional craving and/or urge scales (e.g., Chauchard, Goutaudier, Heishman, Gorelick, & Chabrol, 2015; Young et al, 2009). Two widely used criteria were applied to determine the number of nontrivial factors to be retained: (a) eigenvalues greater than 1.00 and (b) the scree test (Cattell, 1966).…”

“…The first family is composed of 13 original instruments [27,29,31–46] and 52 variations or translations [34,47–107] inspired by the QSU [27], the first validated multi‐dimensional craving assessment instrument. These instruments are self‐report questionnaires composed of 7‐point Likert scales.…”

“…Finalmente, se llevó a cabo una prueba piloto con 30 personas dependientes de la marihuana, quienes estaban hospitalizadas para el manejo de la dependencia química. Por su parte, Chauchard et al (2015) llevaron a cabo la validación del cuestionario en Francia. Estos autores realizaron el análisis factorial confirmatorio y exploratorio, revisiones de consistencia interna con Alfa de Cronbach y correlaciones inter-elementos.…”
