Validation of the French-Canadian version of the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) in a French-Canadian population

Abstract: Introduction: This study aims to empirically validate the French-Canadian version of the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC), a measure of health-related quality of life for prostate cancer patients. Methods: 251 participants completed a battery of self-report scales including the FrenchCanadian version of the EPIC, after having received radiation therapy or radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Results: The internal consistency for the urinary incontinence, bowel, and sexual domains of the EP… Show more

“…The EPIC score is the most used HRQOL instrument; it has been validated in men with prostate cancer 33 and shown to be a robust tool with good psychometrics 34, 35, 36. The validated French version of the EPIC was used in French-Canadian patients 37 . Secondary objectives were to compare HRQOL in the urinary, bowel, and sexual domains to evaluate differences in urinary function using the IPSS and to determine the time to IPSS resolution.…”

“…Sexual and vitality/hormonal health function domain scores fell slightly below our a priori defined criteria for internal consistency. Both domains had similar coefficients in previously translated versions of EPIC-16 into Chinese, and the vitality/hormonal domain had similar coefficients in EPIC-CP for Portuguese, EPIC-26 for French, Italian, and EPIC-50 for German-speakers [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 11 , 21 ]. These two domains also correlated with scores from the original EPIC-CP cohort [ 5 ].…”

“…Lastly, our data are drawn from a primarily Caucasian population, which could limit its generalizability to racial minorities. Prior literature demonstrating the validity of EPIC-26 in racially diverse cohorts does not suggest that the crosswalk would lose validity in such populations [12][13][14][15].…”
