Abstract: Successful implementation of The Framework requires instruments to measure changes in students' cultural capabilities. Measuring nursing students' cultural capabilities can inform their development, identify areas of strengths and deficits for educators, and will ultimately contribute to the development of a culturally safe nursing workforce.

“…Two validated quantitative measures were administered. The 25-item Cultural Capability Measurement Tool (CCMT) ( West, Mills, Rowland and Creedy, (2018) ; West et al, 2017 ) produces a total score and five validated subscales aligned with respect, communication, safety and quality, advocacy, and reflection capabilities in The Framework. The 27-item Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) ( Norris et al, 2015 ) includes validated subscales ( Norris et al, 2015 ) aligned with core competency domains from the Interprofessional Collaborative Expert Panel report (2011) (i.e., teamwork, roles and responsibilities, patient centeredness, interprofessional bias, diversity and ethics, community centeredness).…”

“…26 West, an Aboriginal nurse and researcher, has developed the Cultural Capability Measurement Tool (CCMT), which scores five self-reported key factors: respect, communication, safety and quality, advocacy and reflection. 25 The CCMT may provide an important starting point to enable the critical skills of self-reflection/reflexivity. The assessment challenge remains to incorporate learner insight with patientdriven measures of cultural safety to drive learning, attitude and behavioural change.…”

“…Cultural safety originated from Māori nursing and midwifery practice in New Zealand, where healthcare professionals were urged to reflect on their own culture and unconscious bias brought into nursing interactions in the healthcare system [46]. In New Zealand and Australia cultural safety is formally linked to health equity, registration and competency-based practice certification [47][48][49].…”
