Validation of the Arabic version of the “self-evaluation of negative symptoms” scale (SNS)

Abstract: Background The self-evaluation of negative symptoms scale (SNS) is a new easy-to-use self-administered questionnaire allowing clinicians to understand the clinical and genetic factors affecting the negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. There was a need to translate and validate this scale in Arabic so that Arab-speaking patients benefit from it. Therefore, the aim of our study was to validate the Arabic version of the SNS in a sample of Lebanese patients with schizophrenia. … Show more

“…As reported by Dollfus et al, SNS has excellent testretest reliability with the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for the total scores of the 20 items between baseline and retest being high (ICC ¼ 0.942, 95%, CI 0.883 À 0.971) [11]. Similar results had been shown in other SNS validation studies highlighting good reliability [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Good convergent and divergent validity and reliability are prerequisites of a good self-evaluation scale. SNS had statistically significant correlations with negative scores of PANSS [15], SANS, negative subscores of BPRS showing good convergent validity and insignificant correlations with positive subscores of BPRS and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) Parkinsonism scale illustrating adequate divergent validity [11,14]. As reported by Dollfus et al, SNS has excellent testretest reliability with the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for the total scores of the 20 items between baseline and retest being high (ICC ¼ 0.942, 95%, CI 0.883 À 0.971) [11].…”

“…A SNS total score threshold at 7 for the identification of the negative dimension of schizophrenia with good sensitivity and specificity has also been established (15). Arabic and Chinese versions of the SNS in patients with schizophrenia were also used showing that all items converged over a solution of five factors (16,17). Despite all these studies were conducted in different countries (France, US, Spain, Poland, China, and Lebanon) further validation studies of the SNS are necessary, particularly on larger samples and in various European Countries.…”

“…To date, SNS has been translated into different languages including French [16], Lithuanian [17,18], Spanish [19], Arabic [20] and Polish [21], and it has been validated with acceptable reliability and validity values. Persian, which is the official language of Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, is one of the most important languages of the Middle East and Central Asia.…”
