Validation of a Test of Road Law and Road Craft Knowledge With Older or Functionally Impaired Drivers

Abstract: The revised 14-item RLRCT should be included in the OT-DORA battery. Further research is required to develop the OT-DORA battery as a valid and reliable measure of off-road driver skill.

“…There are tools that have recently become available (beyond March 2010) that hold promise. For example, the Road Law and Road Craft Test (RLRCT) (La Trobe University, 1990;Unsworth, Pallant, Russell, Germano & Odell, 2010), a 14-item test of road law and road craft knowledge, and the Drive Home Maze Test (DHMT) (Krishnasamy & Unsworth, 2011), a pen and paper maze test, were both studied in persons with varying medical conditions (Unsworth et al, 2010); Krishnasamy & Unsworth). These tools are part of the Occupational Therapy Driver Off-Road Assessment Battery (OT-DORA Battery) (Unsworth, in press), which was designed to assess the patient's physical, cognitive and sensory skills prior to going on road.…”

“…We reviewed our earlier evaluation of cognitive assessments (Unsworth et al, 2005), and agreed to include the three highest rating assessments in the focus group discussion; the MMSE (Folstein, Folstein & Mchugh, 1975), the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (Rey, 1959) and Trail Making Tests A and B (Reitan & Wolfson, 1995). A commonly used but unpublished assessment (and therefore not included in the review by Unsworth et al) assessment, the RL&RCT (La Trobe University, 1990) (Unsworth et al, 2010), was also included for discussion. Maze tests such as the Porteus Mazes (Porteus, 1965), and the Maze Test by Ott et al (2003Ott et al ( , 2008) (a computer-based maze), not included in the review by Unsworth et al, were being increasingly cited in driver assessment literature.…”

“…8,10,11 The off-road assessment used by most OTs includes: collection of demographic details, and an assessment of vision, hearing, sensation, physical function (muscle range, strength and tone), reaction time and cognitive status. 5,12,13 However, one of the problems with the current approach is the lack of consistency in the assessments chosen by OTs, and use of assessments that have unknown reliability and validity and no means of referencing scores such as comparison with norms. The results obtained from such assessments have limited value in guiding therapists when making licensing recommendations concerning fitness to drive.…”
