Validation of a measuring instrument for the perception of oral health in women

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the reliability, validity and factorial invariance of the Portuguese version of the Geriatric/ General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) as applied to Brazilian women. A total 701 women over 18 years of age participated in this study. Telephone interviews were conducted. We evaluated the construct-related validity through factorial, convergent and discriminant validity. We carried out a confirmatory factor analysis using the χ 2 /df, CFI, GFI and RMSEA indexes. The inva… Show more

“…Although these three items were classified by experts as essential for the evaluation of self‐perception of oral health (considering the results of CVR) these items were not found to contribute significantly to the assessment of the construct; they impaired the fit of the model and the quality of the estimation of self‐perception of oral health in the sample (Table ). These findings are consistent with previous studies in scientific literature . The low contribution of items 3 and 5 may reflect a psychometric artefact.…”

“…A more realistic point on the OHRQoL was related to mastication, a factor affording greater understanding of oral health aspects that can impact the health and dietary protein intake of elderly individuals, thus minimising the choice of foods not associated with actual chewing barriers and ensuring more direct bearing on this study (physical function domain). 27 Interestingly, neither tooth loss nor depression had significant indirect effects on the consumption of animal protein due to prosthesis use, which was an endogenous variable that mediated the effects of protein consumption, causing both tooth loss and depression to lose significance. However, when tooth loss was analysed in relation to its total effects, it still remained significant and had an average effect (SC = 0.20, P = .03) on total protein consumption, and a strong effect on animal protein consumption (SC = 0.51, P = .02).…”

“…In assessing OHRQoL, only the GOHAI survey questions related to chewing pattern were used as observed variables (physical function). A more realistic point on the OHRQoL was related to mastication, a factor affording greater understanding of oral health aspects that can impact the health and dietary protein intake of elderly individuals, thus minimising the choice of foods not associated with actual chewing barriers and ensuring more direct bearing on this study (physical function domain) …”

“…The assessment of oral health and its impact on the quality of life of individuals is an important step in health care practices, and some measuring instruments have been proposed in the literature to perform this assessment [10]. Among these, Slade and Spencer [11] formulated and tested the subjective indicator, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), to assess the impact of oral health on an individual's quality of life, measured according to the perception of oral health [10].…”
