Validation approach for a fast and simple targeted screening method for 75 antibiotics in meat and aquaculture products using LC-MS/MS

Abstract: An approach is described to validate a fast and simple targeted screening method for antibiotic analysis in meat and aquaculture products by LC-MS/MS. The strategy of validation was applied for a panel of 75 antibiotics belonging to different families, i.e., penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, macrolides, quinolones and phenicols. The samples were extracted once with acetonitrile, concentrated by evaporation and injected into the LC-MS/MS system. The approach chosen for the validation was based on the C… Show more

“…The interfering peaks were not observed in chromatograms of chicken meat. Compared to previous studies, the recovery rate and RSD were satisfactory for majority of tested antibiotics in chicken meat, with high sensitivity and low detection limit (0.01 µg/kg) despite the complexity of the food matrices ( Dasenaki and Tomaidis 2015 ; Dubreil et al, 2017 ; Shin et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Antibiotic resistance thus represents catastrophic threat to humans, especially for immunocompromised patients in clinics. One of the major sources of antibiotic contaminants is from fish farming and poultry industry (Dubreil et al , 2017). The use of antibiotics to prevent and treat bacterial infection is the routine way.…”

“…They are able to identify the analyte and to detect antimicrobial residues below regulatory limits (e.g., MRL, RPA). However, LC-MS/MS methods require expensive equipment, skilled people, and they are time and money consuming [12,13]. Despite these, monitoring plans for antimicrobial residues in Europe are gradually moving towards the use of LC-MS/MS screening, especially because the evaluation of human exposure to residues, even under the MRLs, is now requested.…”
