Life habits during childhood are decisive for future health conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate screen time and anthropometry of children enrolled in municipal schools in the interior of the State of São Paulo. A cross-sectional study was carried out with students from 9 to 10 years of age from a city in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. A socioeconomic questionnaire validated by the Brazilian Association of Research Companies was used, containing also the determination of screen time (TV, video game, computer and cell phone), recommended by the Pediatrics Society. Anthropometry data was collected according to the Lohmam Anthropometric Standardization Reference Manual and compared to the z-score level with the WHO 2007. For the statistical analysis, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square or Fisher’s Exact tests were used.The confidence level was at 95%. Out of the 703 schoolchildren assessed, 97.44% had adequate height, 59.17% eutrophy BMI and 30.44% overweight. There was a correlation between BMI and non-stratified social class (p=0.038) and BMI and neck circumference (NC) (p<0.001).The z-score of the BMI showed that children with weight loss stayed longer watching TV (p=0.0486). The gender comparison showed that girls of higher social class stayed longer at the computer (p=0.0351) and using the cell phone (p<0.0001),and boys playing videogame (p=0.0005). Overweight and weight loss shown in the positive correlation between BMI and NC, although on opposite sides, were associated with screen time and especially with TV in children of higher social class.

Índices globais de obesidade aumentaram exponencialmente nas últimas décadas. Sendo assim, a obesidade se tornou um motivo de preocupação na saúde pública. Além de fatores ambientais, a genética tem contribuído para essa condição. SNPs como rs182052 presente no gene ADIPOQ, rs6548238 no TMEM18 e rs16835198 no FNDC5 e as proteínas séricas adiponectina e irisina têm sido associados com aumento de parâmetros de adiposidade. A partir disso, o objetivo do estudo foi relacionar a presença desses polimorfismos e níveis séricos plasmáticos dessas proteínas com parâmetros antropométricos e bioquímicos. Estudo de caráter transversal, contou com participação de 500 escolares, com idades entre sete e 17 anos. A genotipagem dos SNPs foi realizada pelo qPCR. O tratamento dos dados deu-se por estatística descritiva, UNIANOVA ajustado por sexo e idade e Kruskal-Wallis. Escolares com excesso de peso portadores do genótipo CC para o polimorfismo rs6548238 no TMEM18 estiveram relacionados a maiores médias para colesterol total (p=0,021). Portadores dos genótipos AG+AA para o polimorfismo rs182052 no ADIPOQ foram associados com maiores médias para circunferência da cintura (p=0,042) e triglicerídeos (p=0,021). Indivíduos eutróficos com os genótipos GT e GG para o SNP rs16835198 no FNDC5 foram associados com maiores valores de IMC (p=0,033) e circunferência da Cintura (p=0,044). Níveis séricos de adiponectina e irisina não demonstraram associação com nenhuma variável estudada.

Background: Anthropometric indices are highly associated with cardiovascular events. However, there correlation with hemodynamic parameters among adolescents is still wanting. Study purpose: To determine the correlation between anthropometric indices and the selected hemodynamic parameters among secondary adolescents aged 12-17 years.Methods: In this study, we present data of 485 secondary school adolescents aged 12-17 years. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and neck circumference were measured using standard protocol. Conicity index, body mass index, ponderosity index and body surface area, were computed using standard formulae. Blood pressure was measured using a digital automated blood pressure machine. The rate pressure product was determined as product of heart rate and systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure as the difference between systolic blood pressure and diastolic pressure while mean arterial pressure was the sum of diastolic pressure and pulse pressure. Comparisons of hemodynamic parameters across the anthropometric index’s categories were done using a one-way ANOVA and an unpaired t-test while correlation analysis was done using Pearson correlation coefficient at 95% confidence interval.Results: Our findings showed weak positive correlation between generally body surface area, neck circumference and conicity index with the hemodynamic parameters (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, resting pulse rate, mean arterial pressure, rate pressure product and pulse pressure). However, the ponderosity index, body mass index and waist hip ratio showed negative weak correlations with the hemodynamic parameters. There was a significant difference in pulse pressure among the BMI categories. All parameters showed significant (p<0.05) differences across the categories of neck circumference and waist hip ratio. Generally, in multivariate regression analysis, anthropometric indices showed significant prediction of the hemodynamic parameters.Conclusion: Generally, a weak positive correlation between anthropometric indices and the hemodynamic parameters.
