Vaginotypes of the human vaginal microbiome

Abstract: The human vaginal environment harbours a community of bacteria that plays an important role in maintaining vaginal health and in protecting this environment from various urogenital infections. This bacterial population, also known as vaginal microbiota, has been demonstrated to be dominated by members of the Lactobacillus genus. Several studies employing 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing have classified the vaginal microbiota into five distinct community state types (CSTs) or vaginotypes. To deepen our u… Show more

“…METAnnotatorX2 ( 56 ) was used with default settings, 50,000 input reads, and human read filtering. We retrieved from the public data set a representative complete subset of data sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq platform ( 57 ). The strain tracking analysis was instead carried out using all publicly available genomes of L. crispatus , L. iners , L. gasseri , and L. jensenii through the StrainGE software ( https://github.com/broadinstitute/StrainGE ), with default parameters, against 80 publicly available vaginal shotgun sequencing samples (selected based on its high-depth sequencing) and downloaded from the Sequence Reads Archive (SRA) of NCBI (Table S1).…”

“…The vaginal microbiota change not only during the female menstrual cycle but also during the reproductive process (36). The vaginal microbiota are closely related to women's health, especially APOs.…”

“…Lactobacillus species act to suppress anaerobes like Gardnerella , Streptococcus , Prevotella , Ureaplasma and others related to infections such as bacterial vaginosis. The vaginal microbiota, examined via 16S rRNA sequencing, is often classified into community state types (CSTs) based on which species dominates the microbiome, i.e., Lactobacillus crispatus (CST I), Lactobacillus gasseri (CST II), Lactobacillus iners (CST III), Lactobacillus jensenii (CST V) and CST IV (diverse mixture of anaerobic bacteria); with recent studies based on metagenomics sequencing expanding these groups ( Mancabelli et al, 2021 ).…”
