“…The root system of water hyacinth is robust and extensive (Gettys, 2014; Penfound & Earle, 1948), and is capable of reaching up to 1 m in length (Barker, Hutchens Jr., & Luken, 2014). Water hyacinth roots also have effects on aquatic communities by spatially and temporally altering fish assemblages (Troutman, Rutherford, & Kelso, 2007), invertebrate assemblages (Masifwa, Twongo, & Denny, 2001;Poi de Neiff & Carignan, 1997), and habitat structures in aquatic systems (Toft, Simenstad, Cordell, & Grimaldo, 2003). We suggest that the root system of water hyacinth may also effect aquatic systems by acting as a biological barrier of hydrochoric seeds, subsequently causing deposition beneath the mat, germination, and perpetuation of the mat across years if environmental conditions become suitable for persistence (Cronk & Fenessy, 2001;Harper, Adams, & Mavuti, 1995).…”
