“…Its capability to survive in such extreme conditions is reportedly due to the existence of broad and diverse group secondary metabolites [19]. Furthermore, Macroalgae are well reported to exhibit several UV-absorbing compounds [20], such as phlorotannins, a marine algal polyphenol which has demonstrated anti-UV activity [21]. Another common UV-absorbing compound found in marine macroalgae are the Microsporin-like Amino Acids (MAAs) [22].…”

“…In algae, the production of polyphenols can be induced by UVR, which has confirmed its photoprotective function. There are other reports where it has been found that the availability of nitrates can affect the bio-generation of these compounds (Schmitz et al, 2018). This can be used as a tool when scaling production processes (Copia et al, 2012).…”

“…Extracts from the Phaeodactylum tricornutum microalgae can protect against the adverse effects of UVR, and in addition, it improves skin elasticity and firmness (Ariede et al, 2017). In the purification and elucidation of secondary metabolites responsible for the photo-protective activity, mycosporin-like amino acids, polyphenols and carotenoids have been widely reported (Schmitz et al, 2018).…”

“…In order to evaluate the response of 'Flester' cultivar regarding its reduced photosynthetic performance we also measured carotenoid and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents ( Figure S5). Carotenoids act as light harvesters, quenchers and scavengers of triplet state chlorophylls, and singlet oxygen species, dissipators of excess harmful energy during stress condition and membrane stabilizers [40]. MDA is produced from the lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFAs) in response to oxidative stress by ROS attack [41] but it has recently been suggested that MDA may act as a protection mechanism rather than being a damage indicator if the elimination of MDA and redox signaling regulation works correctly [41].…”
