Utilization of sewage sludge as an ameliorant for reclamation of technogenically disturbed lands

Abstract: When rehabilitating technogenically disturbed lands of mining facilities, fertilizers and ameliorants are to be applied due to the lack of organic matter and nutrients required for the restoration of the soil and vegetation layer. The use of unconventional fertilizers (ameliorants) based on sewage sludge is one of the actual directions of land reclamation at mining sites. The purpose of the work is to summarize and analyze up-to-date information on the effectiveness of the use of sewage sludge for the reclamat… Show more

“…The sludge is a moist, plasticine-like mass with a black-brown color and a pungent specific smell. The sludge is classified as hazardous class V waste according to GOST R 54534-2011, and its total content of heavy metals is well below the standards [12] established by this regulation 4 , At the WTP-3, sludge treatment involves drying and aging on sludge beds for three or more years 5 .…”

“…Although SS has a positive effect on the physical properties of sandy soils, optimizing the density and aggregation, it may contain a set of heavy metals and pathogens. Therefore, it is necessary to study each sediment in specific conditions of reclaimed areas [12].…”

“…Some physico-chemical methods are also used, in particular sorption [14], the disadvantage of which is the need to recycle spent sorbents. The physico-chemical methodthe introduction of ameliorants [15,16], for example, based on sewage sludge [17] is not always applicable and effective, and also requires additional research of each specific sediment and specifics of treated territories.…”
