Utility of the Functional Assessment Inventory in a Post-Stroke Sample

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to describe the psychometric properties of the Functional Assessment Inventory in a sample of vocational service clients who had sustained strokes. Using rating scale analysis, we found that a 4-point rating scale was not useful in distinguishing performance on four items; rescoring these items enhanced the reliability of the measure. Four strata of clients could be distinguished: high, above average, below average, and low. The Inventory shows evidence of concurrent validity … Show more

“…In a meta-analysis study by Ottenbacher et al, the median interrater reliability coefficient for the total FIM was 0.95, the median test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.95, and the equivalence reliability coefficient was 0.92 [32]. Multiple studies have demonstrated validity of the FIM [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41]. The FONE FIM (telephone version of the FIM) was used in each current study to collect data on functional status from the veteran at 3 months postdischarge.…”

“…The current study differs from other vocational assessments such as the Developmental Work Personality Model and Scale (O'Sullivan & Strauser, 2010) because it assesses a range of skills and personal attributes related to choosing, finding and keeping a job -rather than a specific attribute such as work personality. The JAES is also applicable across the full range of participants in vocational rehabilitation rather than have applications to specific disability groups such as victims of stroke (Heinemann et al, 2000) or specific diagnoses such as mental illnesses.…”
