ResumoOs amidos são reagentes depressores empregados na flotação mineral a fim de conferir seletividade ao processo. Para tal, necessitam ser previamente gelatinizados, sendo o método alcalino a técnica mais usada na indústria mineral. No Brasil, utiliza-se como álcali o NaOH e a relação farinha/NaOH é um dos parâmetros analisados nesse processo. Embora sejam importantes, os estudos sobre esta temática são escassos na literatura. Diante disso, o trabalho consistiu na determinação da relação farinha/NaOH ideal para a gelatinização de depressores à base de milho, sorgo e milheto e na comprovação da eficácia do processo à luz da microscopia óptica com luz polarizada. Posteriormente, ensaios de flotação com o minério de nióbio usando as farinhas de milho, milheto e sorgo e suas respectivas misturas como depressores foram realizados e os resultados foram comparados com o amido de milho industrial. Os resultados mostraram que os novos depressores propostos consumiram menores quantidades de NaOH para serem gelatinizados em relação ao amido de milho. A etapa de microscopia óptica comprovou o rompimento das cruzes de Malta para todas as farinhas, indicando a completa gelatinização. O melhor depressor de pirocloro foi a farinha de sorgo e os resultados mostraram similaridade estatística em relação ao amido de milho.
