Uterine leiomyosarcoma and pyometra in a dog

Abstract: A seven-year-old entire female, mixed-breed dog, weighing 19 kg, was presented with a 2-day history of abdominal distension, reduced appetite and general dullness. Abdominal palpation revealed a large mass. Radiography showed a large mass occupying the left mid-abdominal area and convoluted loops of tubular fluid opacity occupying the right mid-abdominal area. Ultrasonography revealed a large heterogeneous mass with an anechoic area and some hyperechoic foci, indicative of calcification, in the mid-abdominal a… Show more

“…Symptoms of pollakuria, dysuria, stranguria and tenesmus observed like in this case were in conjunction with that of Johnston (1993). These tumours may occur along with other uterine affections like pyometra (Tsioli et al, 2011) but no such observations were in the present case. Radiography and ultrasound examination was used for diagnosis of extent of lesions apart from clinical symptoms, biochemical, haematological and histo pathological findings but, White et al (2008) used contrast vagino -urethrogram and urethral biopsy for diagnosis of obstructive tumours.…”

“…Uterine malignant neoplasms are rare in dogs, most of which are discovered as incidental findings at autopsy (Klein 2007). Some papers have reported the occurrence of hemangiosarcomas, adenocarcinoma and leiomyosarcoma (Cave et al 2002, Tivers et al 2009, Tsioli et al 2011.…”

“…Since there is a high incidence of uterine cancer in humans, several studies were conducted to provide a better understanding about the lymphatic drainage of this organ (Burke et al 1996, Echt et al 1999, Levenback et al 2002, Altgassen et al 2007, Bin Li et al 2007). Uterine malignant neoplasias are rare in dogs, although some papers have reported the occurrence (Cave et al 2002, Klein 2007, Wenzlow et al 2009, Tsioli et al 2011. In contrast, cases of canine uterus infection and inflammation are very common (Watts et al 1998, Pretzer 2008, Fontaine et al 2009).…”
