Usual Nutrient and Food Intake of Filipino Stunted Children: Does It Matter?

Abstract: The study focuses on the nutrient and food intakes of stunted children aged 3-5 y/o, 6-9 y/o, and 10-12 y/o. and determine the association between dietary factors and the prevalence of stunting. Data from the 2013 National Nutrition Survey in the Philippines were used. Stunting was defined as height-forage <-2 SD of the reference population. Dietary factors were estimated based on the 24-h food recall. Results showed that stunted children had higher nutrients deficiencies. They had lower consumption of cereals… Show more

“…Konsumsi protein sangat dibutuhkan pada usia balita terutama balita stunting. Konsumsi makanan yang tinggi protein seperti susu, kacang-kacangan, dan daging berpotensi dapat menurunkan risiko stunting (Esfarjani et al, 2013;Angeles-Agdeppa et al, 2020).…”

“…Furthermore, several previous studies reported that it is not the total amount of dietary protein intake but consuming speci c protein sources that could affect growth [19][20]. In developing countries such as the Philippines, however, dietary protein is mainly limited to plant-based sources, which are de cient in certain essential amino acids such as lysine and tryptophan which are both necessary for growth [21][22].Currently, little is known about the dietary intake of school-aged children, particularly in low-and middle-income countries such as the Philippines [23][24]. This present study aims to evaluate the relationship of protein quality, food and usual nutrient intake to the prevalence of child malnutrition.…”
