Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of head and face injuries and associated factors among victims of automobile accidents in a trauma center. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed through the analysis of 9,734 medical records of children and adults hospitalized due to external causes in the Regional Hospital of Emergency and Trauma at Campina Grande, Brazil. Data were analyzed with the SPSS software version 15, also using the Pearson's chi-square test. The significance level adopted was 5 %. Results: Cases of automobile accidents accounted for 25.9% (n = 463) of hospitalizations due to external causes, and 83.8 % of victims were male and 16.2 % were female, representing a sex ratio of 5.1:1. As for age group, most had between 20 and 29 years (38.1%) and with respect to the day of the week, 40.8 % of incidents occurred over the weekend. The occurrence of injury was greater on the face (17.4%) than on the head (7.8%) and most victims had a single injury (58.5%). The existence of bone fractures was observed in 76.9 % of victims and 14.7 % had functional impairment. There was association between variables age (p < 0.001), sex (p < 0.001), day of the week (p < 0.001), presence of bone fractures (p < 0.001) and functional impairment (p = 0.002) with the occurrence of automobile accidents. Conclusion: The most automobile accidents occur on weekends and affect young male individuals, with frequent presence of fractures among victims. The occurrence of injury was greater on the face than on the head. Factors such as age, sex, presence of bone fractures and functional impairment was associated with automobile accidents.

Vulnerability among Young People after Exposure to Alcohol

This is an exploratory research with a quantitative approach that aimed to determine the vulnerability of young people after exposure to alcohol. The study included 108 young people attending bars in the vicinity of a private university in São Paulo. Among the participants, 50.93% were male and 49.07% female, aged between 18 and 29 years. Most were single, Catholic, childless, with employment and higher education students. The alcohol consumption was reported by 100% of men and of women 79.25%. The reasons for consumption were animation and celebration. Regarding the vulnerability after exposure to alcohol, 45.37% reported alcohol amnesia, 36.11% said they kept unprotected sex and 14.81% suffered traffic accidents. It is concluded that the pattern of high and frequent consumption of alcohol are present in the university, requiring a different approach to nursing in promoting health.

Assim, este estudo tem como objetivo identificar a prevalência do binômio bebida alcóolica e direção em estudantes no município de Ilhéus, Brasil. Source of support: Nil Conflict of interest: None ABSTRACT Background:The rates of traffic accidents caused by alcoholic drivers remain high, especially when considering the student population, in which alcohol consumption is higher than in the general population. Thus, this study aims to identify the prevalence of the alcoholic beverage and driving binomial in students in the city of Ilheus, Brazil. Study design:It is a prospective and quantitative study in which a questionnaire was randomly applied to 192 students who were in bars in the city of Ilhéus during the month of May 2016. Results:The male gender was slightly more prevalente (53.1%), with a predominance of the age group between 20 and 30 years (71.9%) and those who were enrolled in college (70.3%). The results of the research indicated that 76.5% drank for the first time between 12 and 17 years; 50% experienced alcoholic drink at a party or social event and 43.7% started drinking alcohol because of friends. As for the habit of driving after consuming alcohol beverages, 62.5% reported owning it and most of the interviewees would take a ride knowing that the driver ingested alcohol (78.1%). Nevertheless, almost all students (97%) consider themselves well informed about the problematic alcohol consumption, especially when associating it with driving. Conclusion:The majority of college students usually drink alcohol and drive. In addition, they ignore the fact that the driver is drunk when accepting a ride, despite being aware of the damages caused by this association.
