ABSTRACT. Within ecological research and environmental management, there is currently a focus on demonstrating the links between human well-being and wildlife conservation. Within this framework, there is a clear interest in better understanding how and why people value certain places over others. We introduce a new method that measures cultural preferences by exploring the potential of multiple online georeferenced digital photograph collections. Using ecological and social considerations, our study contributes to the detection of places that provide cultural ecosystem services. The degree of appreciation of a specific place is derived from the number of people taking and sharing pictures of it. The sequence of decisions and actions taken to share a digital picture of a given place includes the effort to travel to the place, the willingness to take a picture, the decision to geolocate the picture, and the action of sharing it through the Internet. Hence, the social activity of sharing pictures leaves digital proxies of spatial preferences, with people sharing specific photos considering the depicted place not only "worth visiting" but also "worth sharing visually." Using South Wales as a case study, we demonstrate how the proposed methodology can help identify key geographic features of high cultural value. These results highlight how the inclusion of geographical user-generated content, also known as volunteered geographic information, can be very effective in addressing some of the current priorities in conservation. Indeed, the detection of the most appreciated nonurban areas could be used for better prioritization, planning, and management.

ABSTRACT. A growing interest in mapping the social value of ecosystem services (ES) is not yet methodologically aligned with what is actually being mapped. We critically examine aspects of the social value mapping process that might influence map outcomes and limit their practical use in decision making. We rely on an empirical case of participatory mapping, for a single ES (recreation opportunities), which involves diverse stakeholders such as planners, researchers, and community representatives. Value elicitation relied on an individual open-ended interview and a mapping exercise. Interpretation of the narratives and GIS calculations of proximity, centrality, and dispersion helped in exploring the factors driving participants' answers. Narratives reveal diverse value types. Whereas planners highlighted utilitarian and aesthetic values, the answers from researchers revealed naturalistic values as well. In turn community representatives acknowledged symbolic values. When remitted to the map, these values were constrained to statements toward a much narrower set of features of the physical (e.g., volcanoes) and built landscape (e.g., roads). The results suggest that mapping, as an instrumental approach toward social valuation, may capture only a subset of relevant assigned values. This outcome is the interplay between participants' characteristics, including their acquaintance with the territory and their ability with maps, and the mapping procedure itself, including the proxies used to represent the ES and the value typology chosen, the elicitation question, the cartographic features displayed on the base map, and the spatial scale.

A criação de áreas legalmente protegidas visa conservar ambientes naturais e garantir que atividades humanas ocorram de maneira sustentável. Entretanto, sua efetividade depende da contextualização e participação das comunidades locais durante o processo de criação e gestão. Isso se dá por meio de ações de Educação Ambiental que promovam a sensibilização e a conscientização, estimulando o envolvimento da população na redução dos impactos ambientais gerados. Nas escolas estaduais de Ibiúna (SP), município que compõe 62% da Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) Itupararanga, os resultados deste estudo, obtidos por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com educadores e enquetes com educandos, demonstraram que, embora grande parte dos educadores tenha conhecimento sobre a APA e sua importância, essas informações atingem uma pequena parcela dos educandos. Concluímos que a introdução da APA no cotidiano escolar pode trazer contribuições pedagógicas significativas, fundamentadas nos objetivos dessa categoria de Unidade de Conservação.Palavras-chave: educação ambiental; unidades de conservação; participação popular. ABSTRACTThe creation of legally protected areas aims to conserve natural environments and ensure that human activities occur in a sustainable way. However, its effectiveness depends on the contextualization and participation of local communities during the creation and management process. This is done through Environmental Education actions that promote sensitization and awareness, stimulating the population involvement in reducing the environmental impacts generated. At state schools in Ibiúna (SP), a municipality that composes 62% of Itupararanga Environmental Protection Area (APA), the results of this study, obtained through semi-structured interviews with educators and surveys with students, demonstrated that, although most educators have knowledge about the APA and its importance, this information reaches a small portion of the students. We concluded that the introduction of APA in school life can bring significant pedagogical contributions, grounded on the objectives of this protected area category.
