Using the Megargee MMPI-based classification system with MMPI-2s of male prison inmates.

Abstract: on the Megargee offender classification system, 1,213 male offenders' responses on the original Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were rescored and reprofiled as MMPI-2s, and the MMPI-2s of 422 male prisoners were used to estimate their original MMPIs. When classifications based on the original MMPIs were compared with those from MMPI-2s, less than two thirds were classified identically. Therefore, the original Megargee rules should not be used to classify MMPI-2s. A new set of classifactory r… Show more

“…There is much conceptual overlap between the collapsed I-level typology and correctional types derived empirically, such as the Megargee MMPI-based Typology (Megargee, 1994;Megargee & Bohn, 1979), and the Quay Adult Internal Management System (Quay, 1983). Construct validity tests have confirmed these commonalities (Van Voorhis, 1994).…”

“…Finally, our findings suggest that criminality, as a psychological phenomena, can be studied with the MMPI-2 in Latin American countries such as Mexico. While our sample sizes were relatively small and access to the inmates' past history was not permitted by the prison, these findings do suggest future research possibilities including more focused studies on clinical correlates associated with particular profile configurations or classification systems such as Megargee's (1994aMegargee's ( , 1994b. Given the proximity to the United States bor- der, future studies should include measures of acculturation or acculturative stress.…”

“…A substantial portion of the Belgian federal prisoners was classified, and all ten of Megargee's (1994) types were represented. Whether differences with regard to the proportions of the types represent an artefact of the timing of MMPI-2 administration, and whether they reflect dissimilarities in the non-MMPI-2 characteristics of the types, are issues worth further exploration.…”

“…In the Belgian sample, there was greater representation of types Delta and Charlie, and of unclassified cases, whereas types Able, Baker, George, and Jupiter were underrepresented ( p < .OOI). Small effect sizes ( h = 2 0 , Cohen, 1988Cohen, , 1992 D~s c u s s r o~ Megargee's (1994) MMPI-2 based rules were capable of classifying the vast majority of the prisoners in this sample into one of the ten types. Judged on its comprehensiveness, the classification system performed equally well in both an American state prison group and a Belgian federal prison sample.…”
