Using the Borg CR10 Physical Exertion Scale to Measure Patient-perceived Vocal Effort Pre and Post Treatment

Abstract: The anchored Borg CR10 is an easy to use clinical tool to capture treatment-related vocal effort reduction. Whereas VHI item 14 indicates how frequently increased perceived effort is experienced, the Borg CR10 captures the severity of perceived effort used. Thus, the two measures complement each other.

“…In the speech-language pathology area, the Borg scale was recently used to measure vocal effort (17) . In this study, the authors investigated whether the CR10 Borg scale could be used as a measurement of perceived vocal effort by the patient himself during the voice therapy and correlated it with another measurement of perceived vocal effort, the item 14 of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI).…”

“…30 The concept of patient's perception of phonatory effort as an instrument to measure the severity of various voice conditions has been described by several authors in the past. [31][32][33][34][35] Few studies have examined the use of an adapted scale for rating perceived exertion (Borg scales) in determining vocal effort in a variety of voice disorders. [31][32][33] Specifically for persons with ADSD, in an earlier work on patient satisfaction following BTX injections, the decreased vocal effort was among the features that defined a successful injection.…”

[31][32][33] Specifically for persons with ADSD, in an earlier work on patient satisfaction following BTX injections, the decreased vocal effort was among the features that defined a successful injection. 34 Interestingly, as early as 1993, when assessing outcome, Aronson et al asked ADSD patients to rate the change in their phonatory effort at several intervals after BTX injection.…”
