Using Technology to Improve Data Capture and Integration of Patient-Reported Outcomes Into Clinical Care: Pilot Results in a Busy Colorectal Unit

Abstract: Collection of patient-reported outcomes by use of tablet technology and automatic transmission into the electronic chart with data storage for later use is feasible. This process can overcome many of the inefficiencies associated with paper questionnaires.

“…Kolb’s model has been successfully applied to develop a number of patient, medical, and nursing education materials (1320). PCOR can be improved by mobile health technology (MHT), which has been shown to lower health-care costs and improve patient’s health (21, 22). MHT has been used extensively in studies of diabetes and other chronic diseases (2331).…”

“…Recent studies have documented both the feasibility and the advantages of incorporating patient reported outcome measures into clinical practice. 14,15 But these studies do not address the need to assess concerns that cannot effectively be evaluated using standardized measures. No self-report measure can gather the detailed and personally relevant information that a skilled clinician can elicit.…”

“…As a result, patients were more willing to enroll in the research protocol because they knew that their information would be available for physicians and used as part of their care. Previous study showed that patients are more cooperative when they know that data collected for research is also important for their treatment [16]. …”

“…In the research setting, the time and motion workflow analysis was used to provide an understanding of research workflow and identify areas where informatics-based interventions could be used to support clinical research workflow [14]. Previous studies have shown that the integration of registries into clinical workflow are vital for successful registry data collection [15], and that workflow modifications can lead to increased data collection [16]. …”
