Using Small-Area Estimation to Calculate the Prevalence of Smoking by Subcounty Geographic Areas in King County, Washington, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2009–2013

Abstract: IntroductionKing County, Washington, fares well overall in many health indicators. However, county-level data mask disparities among subcounty areas. For disparity-focused assessment, a demand exists for examining health data at subcounty levels such as census tracts and King County health reporting areas (HRAs).MethodsWe added a “nearest intersection” question to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and geocoded the data for subcounty geographic areas, including census tracts. To overcome sm… Show more

“…Digital technology, including sensors found in cell phones and wrist bands9–11 and mobile fitness applications (such as RunKeeper or Strava), may be used to document physical activity 12–14. While these tools provide valuable information about movement, social media applications (such as Twitter and Instagram) can provide insight into both preferred activities and attitudes towards physical activity 15 16.…”

“…This will be taken into consideration if prevalence estimates for specific cities are generated. In addition, we will use statistical approaches that can be leveraged to derive small area estimates even when the survey was not specifically designed for that purpose [ 36 – 39 ]. For the most part, however, survey data will be used in multilevel analyses to estimate associations of city or neighborhood-level factors with individual-level outcomes.…”

“…The SAE method is more widely used in poverty rate estimations but can also be applied for estimating smoking rates for men and women at provincial and national levels. This method was applied in Berkowitz et al 17 and Song et al 18 Generalising the data from GATS, various factors were estimated (such as sex, age, educational level, working status, working sector, household income and expenditure), which possibly affected smoking probability, or the average number of smoked cigarettes of person i at location j using a logistic model as follows:…”
