Using Semantic Technologies in Digital Libraries – A Roadmap to Quality Evaluation

Abstract: Abstract. In digital libraries semantic techniques are often deployed to reduce the expensive manual overhead for indexing documents, maintaining metadata, or caching for future search. However, using such techniques may cause a decrease in a collection's quality due to their statistical nature. Since data quality is a major concern in digital libraries, it is important to be able to measure the (loss of) quality of metadata automatically generated by semantic techniques. In this paper we present a user study … Show more

“…Different software agents and mobile agents will be used in digital libraries to perform different tasks (Madalli, 2003). Semantic Web is introducing semantic search engines and semantic techniques to develop automatic metadata generation to offer effective digital library services (Tönnies and Balke, 2009). Semantic digital libraries will offer a vast amount of information by providing interoperability among heterogeneous information systems.…”

“…Use of Semantic Web in digital libraries will make it possible to re-use these contents. These sources can be searched out from not only a semantic digital library but also other digital information systems available on the web (Tönnies and Balke, 2009). Use of universal resource identifiers (URIs) shall enable the web to search for the exact information and make the information easily accessible and retrievable.…”

“…An excellent overview of related work in the field of quality assessment of manually and automatically generated metadata and semantic annotation techniques is done in [1]. But of course the annotated information also has to be displayed to help users in efficient document retrieval and selection.…”

“…We conducted a user study with domain experts, in our case practitioners in the field of organic chemistry, for evaluating the three metrics DCC, SWD and RCT defined in [1]. The aim of the study was first to get a feeling whether the defined metrics are useful and second how important the information provided is compared to classical forms of visualization.…”
