Using script theory to cultivate illness script formation and clinical reasoning in health professions education

Abstract: Background: Script theory proposes an explanation for how information is stored in and retrieved from the human mind to influence individuals’ interpretation of events in the world. Applied to medicine, script theory focuses on knowledge organization as the foundation of clinical reasoning during patient encounters. According to script theory, medical knowledge is bundled into networks called ‘illness scripts’ that allow physicians to integrate new incoming information with existing knowledge, recognize patter… Show more

“…Illness scripts consolidate previously observed symptoms, signs, diagnostic results, and responses to therapy, the details of which the expert clinician is rarely aware. 40 Facts from preclinical study of the disease are even less accessible to conscious thought. Rather, the expert clinician reaches the point where they "know it when they see it."…”

“…The use of illness scripts as a framework to help leaners organize medical knowledge is among the most widely adopted approaches for successfully teaching diagnostic reasoning. [8][9][10][11][12] We aimed to develop an educational module prototype to coach novice learners to formulate organized knowledge (i.e. a repertoire of illness scripts) in an accelerated fashion thereby simulating the ideal experiential learning in a clinical rotation.…”
