This case study explores the Indonesian learners' reading strategies and identifies high and low-group learners' reading strategies. Semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and open-ended questions were triangulated for validity and reliability data. Several findings were revealed. The Indonesian learners read critically and varied through cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies. They applied more cognitive strategies than metacognitive and affective strategies, which was less helpful and less encouraged to think critically. Technology advances, self- concept, and time have affected the strategies used. High and low-group learners also read differently in terms of cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies. The high group learners read efficiently, critically with various reading strategies, while the low group learners are more literal, attractive, but straightforward, and specific in reading strategy. This implied that students need to be facilitated with proper reading strategies and reading facilities and use metacognitive strategy to enable critical thinking and affective strategy to overcome anxiety, fear, and relaxation. The socio-cultural strategy needs to be used by learners to reach the four skills required by the Indonesian new curriculum. Meanings were shaped by social interaction and cultural context, which then created fun learning and a conducive learning environment.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji implementasi ekspresi formulaik dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing (EFL) di SMA Islam YASPIA. Studi ini berfokus pada penilaian keefektifan penggunaan pendekatan leksikal, khususnya melalui instruksi Ms. Lavender, seorang guru bahasa Inggris di sekolah tersebut. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa penerapan pendekatan leksikal dalam mengajar ekspresi formulaik relatif tidak rumit bagi guru. Para siswa di kelas menggunakan kelima jenis ekspresi formulaik, dengan frekuensi yang lebih tinggi diamati dalam penggunaan kumpulan leksikal dan kolokasi. Namun, meskipun penggunaan ekspresi formula yang tepat, para siswa menghadapi tantangan dalam menggunakannya selama komunikasi. Kesulitan-kesulitan ini termasuk konstruksi yang menyimpang, penggunaan yang kurang, kesalahan tata bahasa, dan penggunaan ekspresi rumus yang tidak tepat, dengan kesalahan tata bahasa menjadi masalah yang paling umum. Temuan ini sejalan dengan penelitian sebelumnya yang menunjukkan bahwa siswa EFL menghadapi kesulitan saat menggunakan ekspresi formula dalam komunikasi mereka. Hasil penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan terhadap bidang pendidikan EFL di Indonesia, khususnya dalam pengajaran ekspresi formula. Diharapkan temuan ini akan meningkatkan pemahaman penerapan pendekatan leksikal dalam pengajaran ekspresi formulaik dan menawarkan rekomendasi kepada guru bahasa Inggris untuk membantu siswa dalam mengatasi tantangan yang terkait dengan penggunaan ekspresi formulaik dalam komunikasi mereka.

Second language literacy research in recent years has attended to emerging genres and various literacy practices. Less explored, however, are the innovative ways of meaning-making and communication facilitated by the use of multimodal resources in a foreign-language context. To bridge the gap, this study investigates how a Chinese-English bilingual speaker coordinates and orchestrates design elements in her vlogs and how decision makings are informed by various factors. Interview data and vlog analysis show that the participant is skillful in using digital technologies, anticipating audiences' needs, fulfilling rhetorical purposes, and negotiating with constraining contextual factors. This study challenges the view that learners in an EFL country have limited opportunities to use the language due to the lack of contact with the target language community. It also suggests that EFL educators could build on what learners do on their own while encouraging them to repurpose the use of vlogs and mobile technologies.
