Infographic of Indonesian Food History in Reading Classes: Focusing on Students’ Perspectives and Reading Enactment

Anchored by scant empirical research on the use of infographics of Indonesian food history in reading classes, this study seeks to explore how students as learning actors perceive this infographic learning enactment and to what extent their reading motivation evolves. To obtain data, seventy-five Indonesian secondary school students were recruited to respond to a Likert-scale questionnaire. Their answers were analyzed in percentages. Besides, ten of the participants were invited for brief interviews. Findings suggest that the students held positive perceptions of the use of infographics in their reading classes. Besides, their reading motivation rises through their knowledge construction on the diversity of food in Indonesia. This study offers pedagogical implications for classroom practices.

IntroductionInfographics, an abbreviated term for informational graphics, are visual representations of complex ideas or concepts. They have long played a role in the dissemination of ideas from various fields, such as business and arts. However, infographics have had an increasing role in the health care field and medical education, both for professionals and patients. To date, there is limited evidence on the use of infographics in the pharmacy profession. Conversely, the evidence is emerging for their use in other health care fields as an innovative strategy for education, dissemination of research, and public information.ObjectivesIn this narrative review, we aim to summarize the basic principles of infographic design, the role of infographics in education and research dissemination, and the role of amplifying audience reach through sharing infographics on social media.MethodsMedline and Google Scholar databases were searched for articles between 1969 and 2020 relating to infographics, healthcare, research and education then screened by all authors for their relevance to pharmacy practice.ResultsThis narrative review discussed the supportive literature for the role of infographics in patient education, higher‐level education, and research dissemination with a closing discussion on the intersection between social media, infographis and education.ConclusionThere is evolving evidence to support the use of infographics in patient education, research dissemination and higher‐level education. More research is needed to identify the role and impact of infographics in pharmacy education and clinical practice settings.

IGV Short Scale to Assess Implicit Value of Visualizations through Explicit Interaction

This paper reports the assessment of the infographics-value (IGV) short scale, designed to measure the value in the use of infographics. The scale was made to assess the implicit quality dimensions of infographics. These dimensions were experienced during the execution of tasks in a contextualized scenario. Users were asked to retrieve a piece of information by explicitly interacting with the infographics. After usage, they were asked to rate quality dimensions of infographics, namely, usefulness, intuitiveness, clarity, informativity, and beauty; the overall value perceived from interacting with infographics was also included in the survey. Each quality dimension was coded as a six-point rating scale item, with overall value included. The proposed IGV short scale model was validated with 650 people. Our analysis confirmed that all considered dimensions in our scale were independently significant and contributed to assessing the implicit value of infographics. The IGV short scale is a lightweight but exhaustive tool to rapidly assess the implicit value of an explicit interaction with infographics in daily tasks, where value in use is crucial to measuring the situated effectiveness of visual tools.
