Using GOMS and NASA-TLX to Evaluate Human–Computer Interaction Process in Interactive Segmentation

Abstract: HCI plays an important role in interactive medical image segmentation. The Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection rules (GOMS) model and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) questionnaire are different methods that are often used to evaluate the HCI process. In this article, we aim at improving the HCI process of interactive segmentation using both the GOMS model and the NASA-TLX questionnaire to: 1) identify the relations between these two methods and 2) propose HCI d… Show more

“…The NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) [ 36 ] is an typical example. It was designed to measure the perceived workload of the subject within six dimensions: mental demand, physical demand, effort, performance, temporal demand, and frustration, and has demonstrated a high reliability and sensitivity in many studies [ 37 ].…”

“…1 make use of the insights about complex thought processes of a human utilizing an interactive segmentation system for the ranking of novel interactive segmentation methods. Ramkumar et al [25,26] acquire these data by well-designed questionnaires, but do not automate their evaluation method. We propose an automated, i. e. scalable, system to approximate pragmatic as well as hedonic usability aspects of a given interactive segmentation system.…”

“…The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) is a method for subjective mental workload measurement that broadly used in both manufacturing and service industry [14]. The integration of NASA-TLX and the goals, operators, methods and selection rules (GOMS) model is successfuly used to evaluate mental workload in human computer interaction process [15]. NASA-TLX also used to evaluate mental workload in electrical power control and operations center in Portugal and Northteast Brazil [16].…”
