Using EWGM method to optimise the FMEA as a risk assessment methodology

Abstract: Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a proactive, highly structured, and systematic approach for failure analysis. It has been also applied as a risk assessment tool, by ranking potential risks based on the estimation of Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs). This paper develops an improved FMEA methodology for strategic risk analysis. The proposed approach combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique with the Exponential and Weighted Geometric Mean method (EWGM) to support risk analysis. AHP is appli… Show more

“…Peeters et al (2018) combined FMEA with fault tree analysis (FTA) in an additive manufacturing system. Mashaqbeh et al (2019) proposed a method to optimize FMEA through an application in a power plant. Kulcsár et al (2020) introduced a pairwise comparison based FMEA which allows the estimation of indices of the previously not evaluated risks.…”

“…In the literature, the use of Multiattribute utility theory (MAUT) and Event Tree Analysis (Garcez & Almedia, 2013;Brito & Almedia, 2009), the use of fuzzy logic based FMEA (Yazdi, 2019, Alyami et al, 2019& Pillay & Wang, 2003 and the use of multi criteria decision making based FMEA (AL Mashaqbeh et al, 2019 have been conducted to decrease uncertainty and to enhance the current risk ranking technique. However, different risk priorities for the same hazards can be obtained, which causes failures in case of the use of multiple risk analysis approaches (Gul & Ak, 2018, Liu et al, 2017a.…”

“…Equal importance given to risk factors in conventional FMEA can cause some problems, such as obtaining the same RPN. Various methods, such as analytic hierarchy process (AHP), 16 consensual‐driven method, 17 and compromise method, 18 as well as dividing risk factors into subjective and objective have been proposed to address the relative importance of risk factors. Ye 19 introduced entropy operator to determine subjective weights based on performance matrixes.…”
