Using Bluetooth proximity sensing to determine where office workers spend time at work

Abstract: BackgroundMost wearable devices that measure movement in workplaces cannot determine the context in which people spend time. This study examined the accuracy of Bluetooth sensing (10-second intervals) via the ActiGraph GT9X Link monitor to determine location in an office setting, using two simple, bespoke algorithms.MethodsFor one work day (mean±SD 6.2±1.1 hours), 30 office workers (30% men, aged 38±11 years) simultaneously wore chest-mounted cameras (video recording) and Bluetooth-enabled monitors (initialise… Show more

“…For proximity tagging, the Link monitor set as "receiver" records the relative quality of the Bluetooth signal from the Link device set as "beacon." RSSI does not have an absolute value, and it does not correspond to a fixed spatial distance [21], although algorithms have be used to convert RSSI to distance within the first two meters [15]. In a validation study comparing location by wearable cameras and proximity tagging in office workers, the most accurate detection was when the participant was stationary [21].…”

In a validation study comparing location by wearable cameras and proximity tagging in office workers, the most accurate detection was when the participant was stationary [21]. It is important to note that ActiGraph recently (April 1, 2020) posted on their website that proximity data can be compromised when a single device is set to both receive and beacon simultaneously [22].…”

“…Through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals, merchants can send content that is automatically displayed on consumer mobile devices. This leads to the selection of the addressed customers and thus to the targeting of a specific group of customers, who most likely buy directly from the given merchant [8,9,10,11]. According to a research study conducted by a team of marketing experts from Laval University, proximity marketing is a distribution channel for site-specific advertising.…”

“…The listeners monitor the MAC address of Bluetooth LE beacons within their vicinity and relay the associated Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) to a server backend. This RSSI can be used to roughly indicate distance from a listener [32]. However, detection is omnidirectional, as dictated by the common design goals of the antenna involved.…”

“…The higher the dBm value the closer the transmitting device is to a listener. The RSSI scale for Bluetooth devices is between 0 dBm and −127 dBm [32,36]. A RSSI of −126 dBm indicates that a beacon is at the limits of detection for a specific listener.…”
