Using ANT ideas in the managing of systemic action research

Abstract: Little guidance has been given to the management of action research and this paper suggests that ideas from the actor-network theory (ANT) may be helpful. Although ANT has been widely used as a tool for interpretation and description of the interplay of the social and technical aspects of organizations, this paper presents a different use of the ideas. It advocates a proactive use, to bring about changes in a situation rather than merely observing and describing that situation disinterestedly from the outside.… Show more

“…According to Lewis (2007), ANT theory is a "grand theory" and provides "all-embracing" lenses through which a phenomenon can be understood in large scale, and this provides a framework for understanding the technological change. One of the proponents of this theory, Lowe (2000), described the steps that are involved in the change process: alignment, enrolment, and congealment.…”

“…My research revolved around adapting digital tools to the collaborative management of urban spaces. Within my field of planning and urban studies, I found no literature that combined AR and ANT explicitly, whereas beyond my field, I could only find two authors that did so, both from organization management studies (Hagglund, 2005; Lewis, 2008). Researchers usually state why they chose a method and not why they discarded another, and I cannot speculate why AR and ANT are seldom combined.…”

“…AR, on the other hand, guided me as I approached my inquiry with an engaged positionality, while having to rely on a complex network of relations and mutual learning. I then briefly introduce the works of Hagglund (2005)—who argues ANT helped him maintain a comprehensive analytical structure while avoiding pre-determined explanations—and Lewis (2008)—who focused on his practice to argue that ANT can help action researchers remain conscious about how they carry out their studies.…”

“…However, ANT does not fit comfortably into the more usual sociological frameworks. Instead Lewis (2007) and Myers (2009) consider ANT to be a "grand theory", a way of looking at and understanding large and complex social and technological structures. More commonly, as noted by Gad and Jensen (2010), ANT is considered to be neither a theory nor a method but more of a lens through which to view the social.…”
