Using an empirical study to evaluate the feasibility of a new usability inspection technique for paper based prototypes of web applications

Abstract: Background: Usability is one of the most important factors that determine the quality of Web applications, which can be verified performing usability inspection. This paper presents the Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE) technique, which allows the identification of usability problems in low-fidelity prototypes (or mockups) of Web applications during the design phases of the development. We have also proposed the Mockup Design Usability Evaluation (Mockup DUE) tool which is able to assist inspectors usi… Show more

“…In order to measure the sample of the study, the heuristic design lists used in the reference studies (Aytekin, 2019;Rivero & Conte, 2013;Du Toit & Bothma, 2009;Kostaras & Xenos, 2007;Nielsen & Molich, 1990) were examined. The heuristic design list developed by Rivero and Conte (2013), which passed the validity and reliability process from these lists measuring abstract concepts such as visuality and design issues, was preferred to be used in this study because it gave results in the focus of design and aesthetics. From the list of heuristics developed by Rivero and Conte (2013), the "inventive design evaluation module" was created by considering only 5 categories on "visual identity, color, typography, visual images and visual principles".…”

“…De esta manera, el elemento para medir la eficacia será el objetivo; una aplicación es eficaz si el usuario puede llevar a cabo la tarea fijada según los criterios establecidos en el objetivo. Para medir la eficacia, se utilizaron tres métodos de análisis: la tasa de cumplimiento de tareas, el recorrido cognitivo [12] y la evaluación heurística [2,7,11].…”
