User Experience Research in the Semiconductor Factory: A Contradiction?

Abstract: No doubt, user experience (UX) has become of high relevance within the HCI community. Within this paper, we present initial results from a qualitative study on UX in the factory context, more precisely in a semiconductor factory. We highlight the challenges of performing UX research in this particular context and the usefulness of probes for collecting feedback from operators in the factory context within in a limited timespan. The results provide an initial rich description of the operator's everyday experien… Show more

“…Interactions -with systems or individuals -are key elements in many working environments, e.g., in factories. Obrist et al [22] emphasized that research on workers' experiences in a factory is important, as UX aspects like collaboration and reliability, usability or even emotions influence working routines in the factory. The experiences that result from these interactions in turn may influence motivation, compliance and performance and are, thus, relevant to investigate in order to improve them.…”

“…Next to the appearance of the robot, other factors probably play a role regarding the acceptance of robots as co-workers. For example, in previous studies it was found that the fear of being replaced by a robot is crucial regarding how the robot is experienced and accepted [22], [28].…”

“…Following the definition of Alben [2], UX is a broad concept including cooperation and usability, as well as factors, such as perceived safety, stress and emotion [3]. Especially in the industrial context, UX factors have to be understood as dynamic over time, which makes them a crucial element in the production process [4].…”

“…ACM 978-1-4503-1063-5/12/03. usability, factors such as perceived safety, stress, or emotion are assumed to be crucial for UX in the factory [4]. According to Karapanos et al [3], we assume that UX factors are not static but change over time.…”
