Abstract:Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) is gaining a strong momentum to become a major interactive technology that can be applied across domains and purposes. The rapid proliferation of MAR applications in global mobile application markets has been fueled by a range of freely-available MAR software development kits and content development tools, some of which enable the creation of MAR applications even without programming skills. Despite the recent advances of MAR technology and tools, there are still many challenges associated with MAR from the User Experience (UX) design perspective. In this study, we first define UX as the emotions that the user encounters while using a service, a product or an application and then explore the recent research on the topic. We present two case studies, a commercial MAR experience and our own Virtual Campus Tour MAR application, and evaluate them from the UX perspective, with a focus on emotions. Next, we synthesize the findings from previous research and the results of the case study evaluations to form sets of challenges, opportunities and best practices related to UX design of MAR applications. Based on the identified best practices, we finally present an updated version of the Virtual Campus Tour. The results can be used for improving UX design of future MAR applications, thus making them emotionally engaging.

Abstract-User Experience (UX) is one of the most important attributes for the success and quality of a software product. UX explores how a person uses an application, and the emotional and behavioral consequences of such use. Although several UX evaluation methods allow gathering information on the reasons for a poor UX, some of them tend to make users feel uncomfortable, such as asking direct questions to shy users. This paper presents our proposal for evaluating UX, the Method for the Assessment of eXperience (MAX), which through cards and a board intends to motivate users to report their experience. The MAX method does not require experienced evaluators for performing the evaluation. Instead, this method is intended at software engineers willing to obtain data on UX and make users feel comfortable during the evaluation. To verify the feasibility of the MAX method from the point of view of users, we conducted a pilot study. The results showed that the MAX method has proven useful for evaluating the UX of finished or prototyped software applications. Also, we have made improvements in the method to meet users' needs when reporting their experience, and gathering data on factors affecting the UX.

Los adelantos tecnológicos llevados a cabo en los últimos años en el sector de los dispositivos móviles, han permitido que estos cuenten con mejores especificaciones de hardware y software, despertando la imaginación e interés de docentes, desarrolladores de contenidos y demás actores del proceso educativo, gracias a su característica de portabilidad, la cual facilita a los usuarios ejecutar tareas en cualquier momento y lugar. Por lo anterior, se realizó la revisión a publicaciones de la Unesco, en donde se identificaron políticas y recomendaciones que ayudan a obtener una mayor comprensión sobre cómo la incorporación de tecnologías móviles en contextos pedagógicos puede contribuir al mejoramiento de la calidad de la educación. Además, se realizó la revisión de literatura en las bibliotecas digitales IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Scopus y Google Scholar, en donde se detectaron los principales conceptos, definiciones y recomendaciones sobre usabilidad, los cuales deberán ser tenidos en cuenta en el diseño de aplicaciones educativas móviles.
