Usefulness of admission hematologic parameters as diagnostic tools in acute pulmonary embolism

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in the diagnostic phase of acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We screened 248 consecutive patients who were admitted to the emergency service with PE foremost in the differential diagnosis. Based on spiral computed chest tomography, the patients were divided into two groups. There were 112 confirmed cases of acute PE and 138 patients without PE. Blood samp… Show more

“…Mean corpuscular values determined in this experiment as well as other parameters of normal erythrograms were within the normal range for adult cats, thereby corroborating the findings of Clinkenbeard and Meinkoth (2000). In our study, no statistical differences were verified between males and females when associating sex with RDW.…”

“…(RIOND et al, 2011). In humans, recent studies have shown that increased RDW can be considered as a risk factor for diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (TSELIOU et al, 2014), breast cancer (SERETIS et al, 2013), and pulmonary diseases (CELIK et al, 2015).…”

“…Haematological indices such as the number and morphology of erythrocytes, leucocytes, and thrombocytes are useful in disease diagnosis and monitoring (Oyewole et al, 2009;Owoeye et al, 2011;Celik et al, 2015). According to Etim et al (2014), the examination of blood provides the opportunity to clinically investigate the nutritional, physiological and pathological status of an individual or an animal.…”

“…Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common lifethreatening cardiovascular disease with 15%-20% mortality (1). Complete blood count is a part of routine laboratory tests performed for patients admitted to the emergency department, and red cell distribution width (RDW), as a marker of anisocytosis, reflects the heterogeneity of red blood cell (RBC) size.…”
