Usefulness and Limitation of Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis of Intestinal Intussusception in Cows

Abstract: The present study was conducted on 6 chronically ill Jersey/Red Sindhi cross-bred cows, which were suspected for intestinal obstruction on the basis of history and clinical signs. These cows were ultimately diagnosed with intestinal intussusception based on a combination of clinical, ultrasonographic and surgical examinations. “Bull's eye lesion” was the most prominent ultrasonographic finding, diagnostic for intussusception either trans-abdominally or transrectally. Dilated intestinal loops greater than 3.1 c… Show more

“…The bull’s eye lesions were visualized as two concentric rings with outer echogenic wall and hypoechoic lumen then inner highly reflective rings with the anechoic center. This ultrasonographic description agreed with that described in cattle [ 7 , 16 ]. The number of the dilated loops was only one loop at the site of intussusceptions suggests that the intussusception is in the duodenum.…”

“…All the thirty animals admitted were female. Similar, findings were also reported earlier (Braun et al, 2002;Dennison et al, 2002;Braun, 2005;Imran et al, 2011;Mestry et al, 2011). However, Constable et al, (1997) reported sex was not significantly associated with the cattle developing intussusception.…”

“…However, abnormal respiration had also been observed by Abutarbush and Radostits (2004) on auscultation of lungs in a calf with intestinal obstruction found increased amplitude of lung sounds with laboured respiration and an expiratory grunt. Imran et al, (2011) also observed elevated respiratory rate and shallow respiration in intussusception. Anderson et al, (1993) observed tachypnea in intestinal obstruction.…”

“…The continuation of these distention results in the local blood supply being compromised by vessel compression, culminating in ischemic necrosis, cell death, and peritonitis or both. After necrosis, in these situations, pain signals may not be shown (AFONSO, 2017;IMRAN et al, 2011).…”
