The reuse of treated wastewater, in particular for irrigation, is an increasingly common practice, encouraged by governments and official entities worldwide. Irrigation with wastewater may have implications at two different levels: alter the physicochemical and microbiological properties of the soil and/or introduce and contribute to the accumulation of chemical and biological contaminants in soil. The first may affect soil productivity and fertility; the second may pose serious risks to the human and environmental health. The sustainable wastewater reuse in agriculture should prevent both types of effects, requiring a holistic and integrated risk assessment. In this article we critically review possible effects of irrigation with treated wastewater, with special emphasis on soil microbiota. The maintenance of a rich and diversified autochthonous soil microbiota and the use of treated wastewater with minimal levels of potential soil contaminants are proposed as sine qua non conditions to achieve a sustainable wastewater reuse for irrigation.

Bu çalışmada, evsel nitelikli atıksu arıtma tesisi çıkış sularının alıcı ortama deşarj edilmesi yerine tarımsal amaç için yeniden kullanılabilirliği araştırılmıştır. Çalışmada materyal olarak bir işletme çalışanlarının evsel amaçlı kullanımları sonucu oluşan atıksuları için projelendirilen ve ardışık kesikli reaktör prensibi ile çalışan biyolojik paket arıtma tesisi çıkış suları kullanılmıştır. Biyolojik arıtma işleminden geçirilen evsel nitelikli atıksuyun tarımsal sulamaya uygunluğu Su Kirliliği Kontrolü Yönetmeliği ve Atıksu Arıtma Tesisi Teknik Usuller Tebliği kapsamında değerlendirilmiştir. Arıtma tesisinden çıkan atıksuların analiz sonuçlarına göre Biyokimyasal Oksijen İhtiyacı (BOİ), Kimyasal Oksijen İhtiyacı (KOİ), Askıda Katı Madde (AKM) parametrelerinde sırasıyla %98, %97 ve %95 giderim verimleri elde edilmiş olup, Su Kirliliği Kontrolü Yönetmeliği Tablo 21 kapsamında değerlendirildiğinde alıcı ortam deşarj standartlarının altına düştüğü belirlenmiştir. Arıtma tesisi çıkış suları analiz sonuçları Atıksu Arıtma Tesisleri Teknik Usuller Tebliği Ek7 kapsamında değerlendirildiğinde de bulanıklık, elektriksel iletkenlik ve sodyum parametrelerinin standartları sağlamadığı ve bu nedenle bu suların tarımsal sulamada kullanımının uygun olmadığı belirlenmiştir.

The need for irrigated agriculture is growing day by day and the largest water withdrawals from renewable water resources are for irrigation. In addition, the available water resources are decreasing and we need to use non-conventional water resources for irrigation due to looming water crisis (Raschid-Sally and Jayakody, Drivers and characteristics of wastewater agriculture in developing countries: results from a global assessment. International Water Management Institute, Colombo, 35p, (IWMI Research Report 127), 2008). However, the volume of treating and using wastewater is limited due to the lack of adequate data and knowledge and/or negative effects of improper wastewater management (i.e. use of untreated wastewater). A comprehensive evaluation of what has been done is necessary in order to explore wastewater irrigation and to avoid trial-and-error policies. Although a study of wastewater irrigation from crops, soil, groundwater, health, irrigation equipments, modern technologies, and other environmental aspects is useful, management studies in comparison with other aspects can help lead to more reliable and more extensive fi ndings and fi nally a better decision on using wastewater for irrigation. The chapter presents challenges and prospects that may help decision making for the use of wastewater in irrigation.
