Use of Sephadex column chromatography in the assessment of thyroid status

Abstract: SYNOPSIS A method is described for assessing thyroid status using Sephadex column chromatography of serum samples with added 1251 triiodothyronine. The method is simple and inexpensive. It gave a correct diagnostic result in 97% of 258 euthyroid, 90% of 80 hyperthyroid, 78% of 59 hypothyroid, and 67 % of 50 euthyroid, ill patients. The principle of the method and its limitations are briefly discussed.Since the red cell uptake of 131I-labelled triiodo-

“…Patients taking cardiac glycosides were excluded. The diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis was made on clinical grounds and confirmed by two or more of the following tests: 20-minute uptake of 99mTc by the thyroid (De Garreta et al, 1968), serum proteinbound iodine, serum thyroxine, and T3-Sephadex uptake (Gimlette, 1967).…”

“…The tests were repeated on the 8th day of life. Plasma-bound iodine was estimated by Auto-analyser The 131I tri-iodothyronine (T,) resin uptake test was estimated after the method of Gimlette (1967). The T, adult euthyroid range is for this laboratory 70-140%.…”

“…Indeed, during the period in which our patient's immunoglobulins were being estimated she Thyroid Studies The serum protein-bound iodine (Riley and Gochman, 1964) was reduced at 2-5 ttg/100 ml, on 2 occasions. This low result was not the consequence of a deficiency of a thyroxine binding globulin because a T3 resin uptake (Gimlette, 1967) was in the hypothyroid range at 0-028. There was no evidence of auto-antibodies to the thyroid from the complement fixation test (Roitt and Doniach, 1958) or from the tanned red-cell haemagglutination test (Fulthorpe et al, 1961).…”
