Use of regression analysis in plant cell, tissue, and organ culture experiments

Abstract: Several authors have suggested that plant biotechnologists perform regression or trend analysis to compare means of related quantitative treatments (e.g., doses of inositol). The present paper compares two statistical strategies to determine the effect of inositol (0-400 mg l −1 ) on proteolytic activity in the culture medium during pineapple growth in temporary immersion bioreactors. Strategy 1 involved one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD). Strategy 2 … Show more

“…MS, QL, and WPM medium culture as well as BA, BAP, Kinetin, and TDZ have been the most commonly used media and plant growth regulators in prunus micropropagation [19,2,5,16,12]. To describe the relationship between treatment levels and response variable, regression analyses are commonly used [20]. The present investigation compared the effects of two nutrient media and two types of cytokinins (BAP and BA), which have been used by many researchers in micropropagation of prunus rootstocks using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analyses.…”

“…Recently, some researchers have suggested that regression analysis is one of the most efficient tools to compare the means of related quantitative treatments such as explant age, hormone concentration, and time course [20]. Biological processes are usually highly complex and difficult to describe accurately by simple statistical strategies based on analysis of variance (ANOVA).…”

“…Consequently, any optimization procedure in plant tissue culture calls for numerous experiments which are often laborious and time-consuming. Therefore, an initial study followed by modeling based on the experimental data not only offer an easy and less expensive alternative but also expedite any such optimization procedures [ 9 , 10 ]. However, use of statistical models for optimization of every stage in in vitro culture is challenging.…”

“…Regression analysis has been proposed by plant biotechnologists to evaluate the related quantitative treatment on the growth characteristics of plantlets (Compton, 1994;Ibanez et al, 2003;Lorenzo and Garcia-Borroto, 2008;Mize and Chun, 1988). Gomes et al (2010) used the multiple linear regression analysis to study the effect of the different factors on the multiplication rate of Arutus unedo L. (strawberry tree).…”
