Use of Plant and Herb Derived Medicine for Therapeutic Usage in Cardiology

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become prominent in mortality and morbidity rates. Prevalent cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis and oxidative stress, are increasing at an alarming rate. Conventional drugs have been associated with adverse effects, suggesting a need for an alternative measure to ameliorate CVD. A number of plant- and herb-derived preventative food and therapeutic drugs for cardiovascular conditions are progressively used for their various benefits. Naturally de… Show more

“…In order to treat a variety of diseases, these phytomedicines can also lead in drug discoveries or itself become a potential drug. Hence, it is very essential to determine and estimate the bioactive potential of ethnomedicinal plants by particularizing the phytochemistry and developing them as a potent source for therapeutic agents [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Pteridophytes ethnomedicinal nature makes them as a traditional medicine to cure several complicated health conditions [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Over the years, plants have been highly valued around the world as a rich source of therapeutic agents for the treatment and prevention of numerous diseases and illnesses. It is estimated that 80% of cardiovascular drugs are derived from plant origins [30,31]. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no research conducted to investigate the cardioprotective effect of C. proximus against cardiac remodeling.…”

“…Yang et al (22) indicated that the aqueous extract of G. acuta may improve isoproterenol-induced myocardial fibrosis through the inhibition of the tumour growth factor (TGF)-β1/Smads signalling pathway. Numerous studies (16,18,(23)(24)(25) have reported that G. acuta exerted a protective effect against injury of the heart and the aorta of rats under various conditions, such as I/R. However, the effect and specific mechanism of action of G. acuta in cardiovascular damage and inflammation under hypercholesterolaemic conditions remain unclear.…”
