In recent years, many alternative bio‐waste‐based fertilizers have been proven to have a beneficial effect on plant nutrition. These also include wool pellet, whose comprehensive evaluation of synergistic effects on plant development and soil biological activity is still a limited field of investigation. To address this, we explored the potential of combining soil inoculations and N‐rich wool pellet as ecologically sound alternatives to N fertilizers. In a pot experiment, we investigated the effect of Azotobacter vinelandii, the Trichoderma harzianum T34, and wool pellet, individually and in combination, on the growth and nitrate uptake of the test plants, as well as on the biological activity and permanganate‐oxidizable carbon of the sandy soil with low organic matter content. The combination of T. harzianum + wool pellet showed the highest biological activity and permanganate‐oxidizable carbon content, while the untreated control plants exhibited the lowest values. The treatment combination of wool pellet and A. vinelandii exhibited the highest nitrate uptake by plants. Measuring the concentration of photosynthetic pigments, net photosynthesis, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and total dry biomass, we found that the treatments led to a significant improvement in the photosynthetic intensity of lettuce plants. These results suggest that wool pellet served as a significant source of N and that their biological activity plays a key role in improving plant parameters. Moreover, the combination of microbial inoculants and wool pellet effectively increases N use efficiency in plant growth.

Depending on the intensity and ecological successional classification of plants, light availability can become an unfavorable condition for producing high-quality seedlings. We hypothesized that applying silicon sources might contribute to inducing tolerance to different shading levels for Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub. seedlings. Two independent experiments were developed: I) the application of five doses of silicon oxide (SiO2: 0.0; 1.0; 2.0; 4.0; and 6.0 g L-1); and II) the application of five doses of potassium silicate (K2SiO3: 0.0; 5.0; 10.0; 15.0; and 20.0 mL L-1 of water). Both were associated with three shading levels: 0% (direct sunlight), 30%, and 50%. In experiment I, we observed that seedlings were more responsive to shading levels and had little influence from foliar application of SiO2, with higher growth, biomass, and quality values when grown under direct sunlight (0% shading). In experiment II, the foliar application of 20.0 mL L-1 of K2SiO3 contributed to greater heights under 0% and 30% shading. Meanwhile, under 50% shading, the dose of 5.0 K2SiO3 favored the species' growth. The application of K2SiO3 favored the increase in the dry mass of the aerial part (DMAP). The highest biomass production and seedling quality occurred under 0% and 30% shading. The 50% shaded environment was most unfavorable to the growth and quality of P. dubium seedlings. Even though the seedlings were not very responsive to silicon sources, K2SiO3 provided a greater response than SiO2. High-quality seedling production is favored when the seedlings are grown under direct sunlight (0% shading).

QuestionsOur study aims to understand whether priority effects or environmental filters drive community assembly in 20‐year‐old restoration areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. For this, we investigated the following questions: (i) does the initial composition of planted communities (distinct combination of ecological groups) affect the natural regeneration regarding functional composition (mean trait values), diversity (functional and taxonomic), and vegetation structure? (ii) Which functional traits of the planted community have the potential to promote or constrain natural regeneration?LocationThe study was carried out in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve, located in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, in a stand of 2.16 hectares with an experimental restoration design established in the year 2000 to test tree species performance of different ecological groups.MethodsIn 2020, we sampled trees with a diameter at breast height greater than 2.5 cm in 20 m × 20 m plots with four replicates per treatment and measured leaf, wood, and seed functional traits. Then, we estimated the diversity (functional and taxonomic richness), functional composition, and vegetation structure of natural regeneration, compared them between treatments, and tested which traits of the planted community influenced them.ResultsNatural regeneration exhibited significant differences between treatments, particularly regarding the diversity dimension (functional and taxonomic) and vegetation structure (basal area and abundance). Wood density, leaf phosphorus content, and leaf C:N ratio of the planted species were associated with natural regeneration (functional composition, diversity, and vegetation structure).ConclusionsPriority effects in conservative tree planting communities affect natural regeneration, while functional convergence observed in acquisitive planting communities suggests the role of environmental filtering. Communities with low wood density, low C:N ratio, and high specific leaf area, which characterize an acquisitive resource‐use strategy, exhibited higher functional and taxonomic diversity of natural regeneration, leading to the desired trajectory in ecological restoration.
