Use of MID-MIX® treated sewage sludge in cement mortars and concrete

Abstract: and concrete samples. However, replacement of cement by MID-MIX ® ash did not significantly affect the strength, water penetration or gas permeability compared to control samples. Leaching tests on MID-MIX ® powder, MID-MIX ® ash and mortar samples produced low levels of heavy metal release. The research shows that thermally processed MID-MIX ® treated sewage sludge produces an ash product that has potential to be beneficially used in cementitious materials for selected applications.

“…The management of municipal sludge via the production of building materials is attracting increasing attention in China. According to previous studies, municipal sludge can be used to prepare brick [ 45 , 46 ], ceramsite [ 47 , 48 , 49 ], and concrete [ 50 ]. For brick making, the quality of sludge should meet the requirements of GB/T 25031-2010 [ 51 ] ( Table S3 in Supplementary Information ).…”

“…A not so often used posttreatment method of WWTS is solidification [ 27 ], which is applied in only several WWTPs throughout Europe. This technology is a physical and chemical oxido-reduction process that involves the reaction of wastes with additives based on calcium-oxide and calcium-hydroxide.…”

“…The product of these reactions is inert material and steam. According to [ 27 , 28 ], the technology is recognized by the EU as the best available technology for treating selected wastes from the oil and petrochemical industries, pharmaceutical wastes, food processing wastes and wastewater treatment sludge. The product obtained from this treatment technology is a white-gray inert granular powder that can be disposed of in nonhazardous waste landfill [ 27 , 29 ].…”

“…Recent research is mostly focused on diverting SSA from landfill and using SSA whenever it is possible, for example in construction materials like cement mortars, concrete, bricks, and tiles (Areias et al, 2020;Chang et al, 2020;Chen et al, 2018;He & Wang;2019;Nakić et al, 2020;Oliva et al, 2019;Ottosen et al, 2020;Świerczek et al, 2018;Vouk et al, 2018;Zhou et al, 2020aZhou et al, , 2020b. Also, some studies have proven that the heavy metals from the SSA are encapsulated within the construction material produced (concrete, cement mortar, bricks), which results in a reduction of their leaching and makes the resulting product environmentally friendly (Donatello & Cheeseman, 2013;Cyr et al, 2007;Nakić et al, 2017;Vouk et al, 2016).…”
