Use of microalgal-enrichedDiaphanosoma celebensisStingelin, 1900 for rearingLitopenaeus vannamei(Boone, 1931) postlarvae

Abstract: The present work investigates the effects of Chaetoceros calcitrans, Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis tetrahele and Isochrysis galbana diets on the lifespan, growth, neonate production and the nutritional profile of Diaphanosoma celebensis. In addition, the effects of enriched D. celebensis on the survival and growth of Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae (PLs) was compared with Artemia. Results showed that significantly higher (P < 0.05) neonate production of D. celebensis was attained when fed with C. calcit… Show more

“…For instance, larvae of angel fish preferred cladocerans (Nandini and Sarma ) and 5‐wk‐old larvae of red eyed tetra, Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae , consumed Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia dubia voraciously (Alanis et al ). Other researchers also reported that 2 and 3‐wk‐old larvae of angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare , and Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus , preferred cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula (Farhadian et al , ), and white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei , postlarvae consumed Diaphanosoma celebensis as a superior live food (Khatoon et al ).…”

“…However, this practice in hatcheries has resulted in limited success and has been reported due to the requirement for exogenous enzymes supplied by live feeds, supporting digestion and growth . So, a cheap alternative diet which can supply above nutrients and boost growth in PL stage is an urgent need (Khatoon et al, 2013).…”
